  • Go to Arvika! I't a litle town about 80 km. from Karlstad with many friendly people. And you must try the pizzas in Arvika, they're super!

    Sola i Kallsta

"Sola i Kallsta", "The sun in Karlstad" pronounced in the local accent was a servant girl in an inn in Karlstad. Her real name was Eva Lisa Holtz and she lived 1793 to 1828. Her nice, happy temper earned her the name "Sola" and later on in her life she also owned her own Inn.

There is a sculpture of her placed outside the Stadshotellet and Bishop's Arms pub. If you stroll by on your way to Sandgrundsudden for example you should take a look at the statue, which has been there since 1985.

    Western grave yard
    by Rojo72
For some reason people on vacation (me included) seem to often go to church yards and grave yards. I guess the way we bury and remember our dead says something about our society.

In Karlstad there are two grave yeards close to the city centre, the eastern and western grave yard on the northern end of the stone bridge. The western yard was taken into use around 1800-1810 and the eastern in 1895.

If you compare these yards to places like Pere Lachaise in Paris you'll notice how much greener and more organised the yard is here.

Gubbholmen in the eastern branch of the river is an island that was formed a few metres downstream when the Eastern bridge (The Stone bridge) was built. It is thus only a couple of hundred years old but it plays a big role in the casual time of Karlstad people. There is a walking track around the island and people use the shores as beaches to bath and tan. There is also a large space on the middle of the island for playing games, such as football or brännball (our version of baseball).

If you feel like it you might want to bring a disposable barbeque and have a barbeque while the sun sets. The bridge forms a splendid background for such an activity!

Bath in the middle of the city?

  • Bathing in the middle of the city - Karlstad
Bathing in the middle of the
    city

Is it really possible to bath right in the middle of a city?! Yes, here in Karlstad the Klar river floats peacefully by and on the grass by the theatre, a stone throw from the pubs and shopping people sun bath and bath all the summer. If you're the kind of person who would be ok with bathing here this is perfect.

And for those of you who prefer people watching; this is the spot for you too.

There are many other areas in the city where you can bath too, Sandgrundsudden (where the museum is) is centrally located, Gubbholmen is many 5-10 minutes by foot from the centre (by the stone bridge) and if you choose to stay at the Scandic hotel at Borgmästarholmen there is a perfectly shaped sand beach 20 metres from the hotel!

The bottom opf the river is mostly made up of sand so it's nice. Most parts of the river are very shallow; for instance today when I bathed at Borgmästarholmen I could have walked all across the river. Some parts are NOT shallow though and deep water may come quickly so take vare. And also: please remember that you're bathing in a river: currents may be strong cetrain times (although I've never experienced any current at all.

    Start of the fire 1865!

It was in the early morning of July 2nd 1865 that the fire that would destroy almost all of Karlstad started.

To my recollection it was in a bakery the fire begun and spred rapidly over the city to the chimes of churchbells. When the fire was extinguished only 9 of all of the city's lots were undamaged by the fire. One of them being the Bishop's residence. The church had damages to its roof and outer walls.

When you go sight-seeing I think you should pay attention to this discrete corner of the city center. It's the corner between Drottningatan and Östra Torggatan that housed the Bakery some 150 years ago. Today there's a sign on the wall saying it was here that the fire started and what parts of town survived. The sign is only in Swedish unfortunately, but you can see it below the Stadium sign in this picture...

Since there is so much water all around Karlstad there are lots of water activities to take part of. Renting a boat and go on the river is super nice, or there are several beaches where you can go sun bathing and swimming, one in the middle of the centre by the music theatre! Another thing that is nice to be doing around here is to go on a road trip around Värmland. The landscape in this province is absolutely beautiful and there are many things to be seen. Close to Hagfors, about 1 hour from Karlstad, lies Farm Lakene which I visit all the time. There you can go horse riding, fishing, canoeing and more. Its a very cool place.

The Elm block was one of the very few areas to survive the fire in 1865 and hence it is there that you will find the prettiest buildings in the city centre. It block is strategically located next to the river so it's a nice stroll for half an hour or so around the houses.
