Mårbacka is an estate and also a very old mansion. It was the birt place of Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) who was a Swedish author. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and most widely known for her children's book The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, but also Gösta Berling's Saga.

In 1909 Selma Lagerlöf won the Nobel Prize "in appreciation of the lofty idealism, vivid imagination and spiritual perception that characterize her writings". The main building was constructed in 1793 and rebuilt in 1921-1923, designed by architect Isak Gustaf Clason.

Mårbacka is now kept as a memorial estate, as a result of the author writing in her testament that Mårbacka should be preserved and shown to the public in the condition it was at her death.

By paid entrance, visitors can get a guided tour of the main building and next to the building is also a garden, a cafe and a bookstore. In the barn there is a memorial exhibition of Lagerlöf's life and writings.

You can get here by using the regional busses which departs from Karlstad (if Karlstad is your place for departure). There's also a railway station in Sunne but they have less departures than the local busses.
