Just outside Skarvsjöby you can find a very large area of swamp and bogs. Here you find many square km of just bog and old dead trees. It's a quite special feeling to stand there, just in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the nature.
In Stensele, just outside Storuman, you can find this old and abandoned bridge. The bridge itself is not much to see, but the view over the river Umeälven is very beautiful, the calm part of the river with the village Stensele and Stensele church in the background. The easiest way to get here is to follow the signs toward "Stensele industriområde" but continue driving straight on when passing the industrial area.
This bridge was in use until 1990, but was closed when the new road between Skarvsjöby and Storuman was opened. On this bridge, known as Stora Bron (The big bridge), only small cars could meet. Larger vehicles as busses or trucks had to wait for a free road before entering the bridge.
The nature in the area around Storuman (and in the rest of Lappland) may vary a lot between different places. With in some miles in distance you can find bog deserts, bare mountains and jungle like rivers with hard to force vegetation like the place on this picture.
This photo is taken just north of the village of Skarvsjöby.
This road goes between Skarvsjöby and Pauträsk and is know to be one of the roads with most sharp bends and bumps. If you are not afraid of bumpy roads, I could recommend a trip on it, taking this road will take you directly out in the Lapland wilderness.
About 20 km south of Storuman at road 45 you will see a sign pointing to a place called Verksamheten. Leave road 45 and take this narrow gravel road. After about 10 km you will come to the village called Verksamheten, translated into English the name mean "The Business", but I promise, you will not find that much business here.
In the village Skarvsjöby you can find a museum showing about life in a typical Lapland village in during the 1800's and 1900's. The museum is located near road 45 in the north of the village.
The museum is normally only open on request. Just read the signs outside the museum and call the number, the host will be happy to come and give you a personal guided tour.
Just outside the main streets you will find a deserted warehouse area. Most buildings are from the 1920's when the first railway reached Storuman. Today most are unused, but still in a very good condition, so walking around there will bring you back about 80 year in time.
Follow the Järnvägsgatan as far east as you can, then you will see where to go..
You can also see the bog desert in the winter, it's easo to access this area with snowmobile, just follow the snowmobile path towards Pauträsk.
Just outside the central area of Storuman you can find this building called Lokstallarna. It was the engine garage used for the trains on the railways Inlandsbanan and Tvärbanan.
This is the oldest house in Skarvsjöby, from sometime in the 19th century. Outside the house you see and old lever-well.
In Skarvsjöby 17 km south of Storuman there is a small park with tree trolls. It's simply existing trees and stumps in the nature that is the base material for the trolls.
In Norrheden you can find this abandonded train station, built in the 1920's. This station is located at Inlandsbanan near road 45, about 25 km south of Storuman.
