    Snow in December

In the area around Storuman you will find a lot of wilderness. Here you can get to places where no one have been before, sitting down and listen to the sound of silence.

This pictures is taken in December, in the dense woodland outside Skarvsjöby, just a 15 minutes drive with the snowmobile, but still on a place where not many have been before, if ever anyone.

    Stensele Church - Student exam

The church in Stensele built in 1886 is Sweden’s largest wooden church.

The church is called the Cathedral of Lapland, and has place for 2000 persons, and that is a lot when thinking that the place where the church is located only had 167 people in year 1900.

There are a few different stories about why the church is as big, but most likely it was a mistake. The explanations of the mistake is that the drawing was made in the metric system with measures in centimetre (cm) but the constructions workers didn't knew that and thought the size was measured in inch instead. This mean that everything became 2,54 times larger than it was supposed to be.

The wooden suspension bridge at night

In Storuman you can find something as unusual as a wooden suspension bridge. In the lake of Storuman there are a number of small islands and the main island Luspholmen. Those are connected to the mainland with a number of small bridges. The longest bridge is this wooden suspension bridge. (Only one wehicle at the time is allowed on the bridge)

At night time the bridge is light up by floodlights.

    Picking cloudberries

    Cloudberries

If you are in the north of Sweden in July or August you have to try going out to find some hjortron. A hjortron is an yellow berry called cloudberry in english and rubus chamaemorus in latin.

Cloudberries can only be found in the north of Sweden, and are some years very difficult to find. The taste of the berries are not like anything else, some doesn't like them, but I guess it's just some they are not used to the taste.

Or course you can buy cloudberries, but they can be very expensive. Another good reason for picking them yourself is Swedens quite special rule called 'allemansrätten' which means that you are allowed to be out in the forest without any permission of the land owner, you can even go and picking berries. As long as you are not walking over their lawn, I promise that the Swedish people don't care.

A tip can be to have warm cloudberries with icecream, that's something really special.

    English - Cloudberry
    Latin - Rubus chamaemorus
    Swedish - Hjortron
    Norwegian - Molte
    Finnish - Muurain
    German - Moltebeere

    Church in Stensele

The magnificence of this church came about by mistake. Drawn up in inches, it was mistaken to be in centimetres. Everything became 2.54 times bigger! It can now seat up to 4000 people :)
