    In Storuman you will find one of the most special library buildings in Sweden. The public library is located in the old railway hotel.   • A 'real' nesting box

    A real nesting box shall be made by real wood, even with the bark left on the outside. I found this nesting box while walking by the lake in Skarvsjöby. But even though I waited for a while, I didn't see any bird looking out from the window.The Swedish word for nesting box is Fågelholk.

Storuman Warnings and Dangers

  • Snow melting floods

    Because of the snow melting it can become quite high water levels in the rivers. This often happens in May and June when the large mass of snow in the mountains is melting. Some years this can even cause floods. Not normally something dangerous, but just be aware of the fast flooding water if you go near the rivers.

  • Be aware of holes in the ice

    When you are out on the ice in the winter you shall always look for holes in the ice. Even if it's a lot of snow and cold weather it can always be hidden holes in the ice, especially at lakes where the water level vary. The risk for holes is as biggest in the beginning and end of the winter.

    Be aware of the fact that it can become quite cold in the winter. It's not unusual that the themperature drops below -30 C (sometime even -40 C) in the winter, especially in December and January. So remember to bring some warm clothes.

    Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Be aware that the weather can change quite fast. Especially on warm summer days (June to August), the clouds can grow quite quickly, turning the clear blue sky into heavy rain showers. So remember to bring some raincoats or umbrellas.

Storuman Off The Beaten Path

  • The bog desert outide Skarvsjöby -...

    Just outside Skarvsjöby you can find a very large area of swamp and bogs. Here you find many square km of just bog and old dead trees. It's a quite special feeling to stand there, just in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the nature.

  • The wilderness as neighbour

    I was sitting reading a book outside my parents house, when I heard some sounds. I looked up and saw two reindeers walking by. They stoped about 50 metre from the house, eating some grass and not taking any notice of me standing there and taking pictures of them. It's really great to be able to be so close to the wilderness.
