If you come to Umeå in the spring or in summer-time (or in the autumn) I would recommend going by bike along the river in both directions from the central part of Umeå, but especially "up" the river, in the direction from the sea (towards the part of the city called "väst på stan"). On your way you will see lots of really beautiful nature, the river, some small farmer's houses, fields, forest and an interesting metall-bridge:-) After some kilometers you will come to a beautiful place called "Baggböle" where the river is often almost completely dry and one can see a strange view with lots of big stones where the river sometimes goes. At this place there is also a park with rare trees.
This is all really beautiful, I think! It takes some time so one idea is to take some food with you and make a picnic! I know that it is possible to rent bicycles in Umeå, though I haven't done it myself, but ask in the sport-stores, for example at "Intersport" (that is in central Umeå).
That's what untypical for this northern region - multi-story buidlings. Due to the rapidly expansion (it is the fastest growing city in Sweden) it became necessary to build them.
The river in the photo is the Ume which comes down from the mountain lake of Storuman.
The original parish church was built in the mid-17th century. In 1720 the Russian army invaded northern Sweden and burned it down. In 1725 the curch was rebuilt but destroyed iIn 1888 during the city fire which destroyed the town almost completely.
Today you can see the Neo-Gothic red brick church, built in 1894. Its steeple overlooks the whole centre.
Umea is located in a nice sorounding. You can experience that by go hiking on tavelsjöleden. Okay its not Kungsleden but its really worth ;). The trail is about 40 km at all with stops between that you can reach by car or bus. So you can also go shorter parts. You can bye a information brochure in the tourist information (only in swedish) where there is a rough map and some interesting geological background information to the points of interest on the way. The trail is well marked an you can also go hiking there in the winter. But then with cross country skis ;).
It starts just at the border of Umea. In a part called regementet. There close to the army garrison you will find a sign.
The centre of Umeå has numerous department stores, restaurants and wide promenades. When it rains you can go through one of the passages without getting soaked.
Great place for shopping!
Visit the walking street and all the nice little shops. Here's a picture of the street and the farmer's market.
