The Flying Scotsman: Great beer, food and atmosphere

by MickeH Written Apr 19, 2006

    The Flying Scotsman

This is a small pub on a sidestreet to Avenyn that has great beer and a frinedly staff to serve it to you. And with great beer I mean they have Tetley's and Guinness. 'Nough said. They have more beers than that off course, but who needs it?

They also have good food, and it's always 2 for 1 on the favourites, so it's the perfect place to start the evening. Because you know you better eat something before diving into that beer if you want to avoid hitting the wall, or floor as the case may be, to early.

It's a pretty small place and it ususally has a really good atmosphere. Really crowded on the weekends though, for better or worse. Depends on what you are looking for.

    Rockbaren: Let there be Rock

They say their name is Hard Rock Cafe, Diamond Dogs etc. They talk the talk, but do they walk the walk?

If you want rock then Rockbaren is the place to be. Here you get great musik and beer. Period. And what else is there to wish for? And they are pretty good at taking requests, as long as it's not to busy and they have five people shouting songs all the time, apart from the fifty that are shouting for beer.

It's open until 03.00 every night of the week. Happy hour until 22.00 which means 2 for 1 on beers.

Upstairs is generally more "pop-rock" like G'n'R and the like. Usually better music downstairs. Also a smokeroom upstairs. Don't take your beer with you though, you'll be kicked out faster than you can say Motörhead! Don't know why but that's the rule.

To sum up, pretty gritty, pretty dark and pretty god damn good.

The famous "Avenyn" parade street can be quite a tourist trap but is nevertheless popular with locals too as long as they are looking for dance floors and drinks. Here you can find not only restaurants but several famous nightclubs. Just follow the music of your taste in the evenings.

Dress Code: Various depending on place.

Lounge: Hip night club on Avenyn

    by Henrik_rrb Written Feb 8, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is the place you go to if you want to look cool. :) One of the new clubs on Avenyn, the biggest street in Gothenburg, and it's supposed to be really hip.
We got here on a Thursday evening, and despite the day it was fairly packed with people. Lots of guys in the age 25-30. Lots of girls in the age 16-20...

    Damn I'm old...

We managed to find a table for our gang, but were abruptly chased away by a waitress after half an hour as the table was reserved (i.e her friends needed somewhere to sit...).
Was about to leave the place right away, but decided to stay a while longer.

The club is nice, with a huge bar in the middle. On the top floor you go outside, although it's covered with glass around. Most probably very nice in the summer, but now in January it was just cold. Super cold...

The first floor is better, and the music was good. Lacked a dance floor though, so the atmosphere was quite tense. Would say that some of the people there had reasons to stay away from the police...

Quite full of bratts guys (meaning guys with daddy's credit card...) and wannabe girls who ran after the money.

Was fun to stay there for a night, but I doubt I'll go back tomorrow...

    And, damn I feel old...

While we were there a photographer came up, saying he was from the home page of Lounges. And according to the photos from the weekend before the media age turns up a bit during the weekends.

Probably that's when I should go there instead... :)

Dress Code: Since we were there on a Thursday night it was no problem to get in, but it's not the place you go to dressed in a t-shirt and sneakers. On weekends, be there early to get in, specially if you're a guy.

    Simply, dress nice.

Free entry when we were there, but I doubt it's the same service on weekends. 20 SEK, or 2,50 euro, for leaving your jacket in the wardrobe.

Open only three days a week:
    Thursday 22-03.00
    Friday: 17-04
    Saturday: 22-04

    Trädgårn: Classic nightclub

by Sjalen Written Jun 19, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Trädgår'n takes its name from the fact that it is in Trädgårdsföreningen, the horticultural society's park. This gives it a wonderful atmosphere as a warm summer night can be spent dancing under the stars :) A real classic in the city, all sorts of people come here to have a great night out and there are also the odd gig with famous bands now and again.

Dress Code: Appropriate night club wear but not too strict.

Avenyn, Diamond dogs: For a late beer

    by Henrik_rrb Written Jun 27, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Most places in Gothenburg closes at 1am on weekdays, so if you want to continue to have a few more beers after that you'll have to go to the Avenyn street. One of the places that are open late there are Diamond dogs.
Very cosy place, with both a small dance floor, but also plenty of table with sofas where one can sit down if you're more in the mood for that.

Music is good, but still not very noisy, so you can sit down and just talk if you like.

The service is good, the beers are good, although the options are quite limited when it comes to draft beer.

It's said to be a place where criminals take off to, but so far I've just had fun there.

The guard was pretty offensive last time I was there, throwing us out exactly at 3am, not caring if we had finished our drinks or not. It's the kind of behaviour that makes me go somewhere else next time.
Only problem is to find a place that is open at that time... :)

There is also a small taverna, so during the summer months it's possible to sit outside and look at the people passing by.

Dress Code: Not very fancy, so you can most of the time wear anything you want.

Gothia Tower Skybar: A bar with a view

by Sjalen Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

All the "umbrella drinks" you would expect but in the skybar on the top of the Gothia Tower hotel which means a great city view too. Actually, you could afford staying at the hotel too these days since they often have city break special rates and aren't more expensive than the other "biggies" in town.

    Dress Code: Not too casual.

The Dubliner: Good for the craic

by CliffClaven Written Dec 10, 2007

Wherever he goes in Europe these days, old Cliffie manages to stumble into an Irish pub. He hadn't walked far along Avenyn, Gothenburg's main shopping street, before he found The Dubliner. It was a Thursday night and the place was already full at eight o'clock. Old Cliffie squeezed in beside a pillar, ordered a pint and an Irish steak pie (baked with Guinness, of course) and enjoyed the multilingual craic that rippled through the pub.

    Avenyn: Lilla London/Little London

    by Henrik_rrb Written Jul 8, 2007

Another pub, quite small, on the huge street Avenyn. Had a very nice evening/night/morning here a while ago when the bartender was nice enough to let us stay far after closing time.

Another cosy pub, as the name says it's an english atmosphere here, while Gothenburg is also known as "Little London". Hade plenty of different beers, but even more spirits. Also wellknown for its "after work" during the week, where they serve both beer and food to a good price.

It's a part of the nightclub Valand, although I never realised that while there. It felt like one place.

Good prices on the alcohol, finished the night (before the bartender started to give away free beers...) with four beers and four drinks. All in all for 500 SEK. Not too bad, seeing that it's on the Avenyn.

Dress Code: During fridays and saturdays it's open until 3am (although I'm quite sure I was there on a wednesday, and didn't leave until 5.45am...? :) ). The nighclub Valand is open until 5am on weekends though.

No dress code for Lilla London. You'll need to dress up more for the nightclub though.

Well, my friends... I had a lovely night here with the south American ladies. They danced all night and I drank beer and drinks. Just fun. This is a night club with many small rooms and I think I was in the salsa bar.

Dress Code: I was there with a shirt and jeans. It was no problem to get in with that.

The avenyn is a great main strip for going out at night. It has everything from bars to clubs to meet everyone's interests. Some places have door charges for your entrance but if you think it is too high just keep talking until you find another one. Also some of the clubs want you to be 23 or older as well.

Dress Code: Snazzy! Sweden is a fairly fashion conscious country so it would bennefit you to dress nice.

    Avenyn: Nighttime!!

    by Polly74 Written Oct 7, 2004
    Avenyn

There is plenty of good entertainment and culture to choose from in Göteborg, all year around, but especially during the summer. There is the Göteborg Opera, Konserthuset with Göteborg Symphony Orchestra, lots of restaurants, bars, cafés and nightclubs along the main streets Avenyn and Linnégatan.

  • Stage door: Nice pub

by annamantere Written Jul 26, 2003

This isn´t a very big place, but it´s nice and cosy. Staff is extremely friendly and nice, food is GOOD and if you´re lucky, you might spot some swedish celebrities here, as this is the place where the actors and musicians go after the plays and conserts in the near-by theatre and consert-hall. Walls are covered with pictures of actors and theatre-scenes and even the tables have pictures on them.
My favourite dish here are the delicious chips ("klyft potatis").

    Dress Code: casual
