The street for everyone
Avenyn, or "Kungsportsavenyn" as it will be written on most maps, is by far the biggest and most famous street in Gothenburg.
Here you'll find a lot of things, from shopping, museums and restaurants to nightclubs and parks.
The street itself I would say is around 2-3 kilometers long (although I might be totally wrong... So bad at guessing the lenght), and starts almost at the water, and then goes up all the way to "Götaplatsen", where you'll find a big statue of Poseidon - the god of the ocean.
Along the way you'll find parks, as Bältespännarparken (where you can sunbath or listen to concerts in the summer, and figureskating in the winter), restaurants as Hard Rock Café, Brasserie Lipp and Joe Farelli's, nightclubs as Nivå, Bryggeriet, Park Avenue, shopping with shops for shoes, cameras, clothes, food, and museums as the Museum of Art (Konstmuseum) and the Concert Hall.
Especially in the summer this street is a really lively one, with the nightlife going on until 5 in the morning at some places. It's also a very popular place for some after work, when people goes here directly from work and take a beer at one of all the pubs.
Along the street you'll all the time find the trams, a traditional thing for Gothenburg (unlike Stockholm, this city is beautiful, so we don't have to dig down the subway underground... ;) ).
In the nights this is a crowded street, but please be a bit careful. Sometimes it's quite violent, and there are also a lot of taxidrivers who isn't exactly legal...

If you are travelling to Gothenburg you won't miss Avenyn even if you try. It's right smack in the centre of town and much of Gothenburg's life circles around it.
This is the main gathering street for people out to have a good time. It is littered with pubs and bars and restaurants as well as shops and is usually quite crowded.
If you are going clubbing, I suppose this is the place to be, since Valand, Lounge and many more clubs have their business here.
But it can be a bit of a tourist trap as many tourists are drawn here and may simply stay in this area for the duration of their holidays. Try not to miss out on the other places in Gothenburg because you get stuck on Avenyn.
Paris has the Champs-Elysee...
...Barcelona ‘Las Ramblas’, Gothenburg the slightly less famous ‘Kungsportsavenyn’, or simply ‘Avenyn’ to the locals. This long tree-lined boulevard, in the tradition of many great boulevards across the globe is a good place to grab a coffee, dine out or simply people watch. Retail therapy your calling? Again here there’s all manner of shops to keep you and your wallet busy, and if your feet get tired most of the major tramlines roll up and down the full length. At the top of the boulevard don’t miss ‘Konstmuset’, Gothenburg’s impressive art museum (as well as Scandinavian masters, also Picassos, Rubens and Van Gough’s feature), the camera-friendly entrance to which is dominated by the immense Statue of Poseidon.

The broad street Kungsportsavenyn (Avenyn) is a street with shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. A warm summer evening this is the place for strolling up and down, or to sit down at one of the outdoor restaurants and watch people go by.
Kungsportsavenyn stretches from the Kunsportsplatsen at the northwest till the Götaplatsen on the southeast. It is a 19th century big avenue filled with various architectural styles up to present-day buildings. Stora teatern on the northern and cultural complex on the southern tip on Götaplatsen are the biggest cultural institutions.
This street is lined with shops, caffees and restaurants. The prevailing language in these places is not Swedish, since the locals go out somewhere else. Although you can't miss this famous avenue in Göteborg I could have easily place this tip under the "Tourist traps" as well. (Be sure just to walk up and down here.)
A continuation of Ostra Hamngatan, Kungsportsavenyn, known simply as Avenyn, is one of the cities main streets and from what I could tell the most well known. Kind of a "Champs Elysee" of Goteburg. Its just a wide avenue lined with shops, bars etc with the more interesting Gotaplatsen at the top
Avenyn (the avenue) is the place to see and be seen. That's a busy street basically 24/7 with places to eat, discotheques/bars, shops, etc. It's a nice place to stroll and look at many nice looking buildings when the weather allows it.
The STREET in Gothenburg
Avenyn is a very nice place to be. It is full of shops, hotels, restaurants, bars, museums, concert hall, nightclubs and cafés. During the summer every restaurant with self respect also has an outdoor part of the restaurant.
Kungsportsavenyn, commonly known as just Avenyn ("The Avenue", It is the major avenue in the city), is the main street of Gothenburg, Sweden, and a smaller counterpart of the Champs-Élysées. It was created in the 1860s and 1870s as a result of an international town planning competition. With a total length of about 1000 meters, it stretches from the old moat at the edge of the older part of Gothenburg, and ends at the Götaplatsen square, where the Gothenburg Museum of Art and several other cultural institutions are located.
At the moat, it connects to the smaller street Östra Hamngatan, and the Avenue takes its it full name after Kungsporten, the "King's Gate" which was located at the point in the fortifications where Östra Hamngatan ends.

If you are in Göteborg for any amount of time, you are sure to find yourself on the Avenyn (the Avenue) at least once, if not more. Formally called Kungsportsavenyn, it is the main street running through Göteborg, and is a very popular place. It was created in the late 19th century as the result of a planning competition. At almost 1km long, the Avenyn is lined with restaurants, bars, shops, museums, trees, parks and people. It ends at the pretty Götaplatsen square, which is home to the Concert Hall, Museum of Art, the City Theatre and the famous Poseidon statue. The Avenyn is a lively place any time of day or night, especially in the summer. If you ever need something to do, take a nice walk down there and you’ll have plenty of choices, or just enjoy the stroll itself.
A very well known place in...
A very well known place in Gothenburg is the 'Kopparmärra' ,The CopperMare. It's an excellent meetingplace since you can sit all around it, it's downtown and if whoever you wait for never shows up, it wont look too strange that you're sitting there, you can just keep on hanging arund and just look at all the funny looking people that's walking by. There is also places to get food all around it too, in case the one your meeting is running late.
The ever famous Avenue
This is the most talked about street in Gbg. You'll find rows of shopping, theatres, restaurants (just like Orchard Road, in Singapore). At the end of the road, is the Hassleblad Centre.
