One side of Avenyn by MickeH If you are travelling to Gothenburg you won't miss Avenyn even if you try. It's right smack in the centre of town and much of Gothenburg's life circles around it. This is the main gathering street for people out to have a good time. It is littered with pubs and bars and restaurants as well as shops and is usually quite crowded. If you are going clubbing, I suppose this is the place to be, since Valand, Lounge and many more clubs have their business here. But it can be a bit of a tourist trap as many tourists are drawn here and may simply stay in this area for the duration of their holidays. Try not to miss out on the other places in Gothenburg because you get stuck on Avenyn. Leave a Comment Directions: Don't worry, you'll find it!

Not a good picture, but a good street :-) by MickeH This is the best bar street in all of Gothenburg. It is more relaxed than Avenyn and has a much better atmosphere. Here you can go to eat, drink or just stroll around. Most of the restaurants has great outdoor serving areas and there are lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. I will not single out any specific places because Linnégatan is a place to drift from place to place rather than getting stuck in one place. At the top of Linnégatan you come to Slottskogen, more about that under it's own header. Leave a Comment Directions: Between Järntorget and Slottsskogen

by MickeH This is the best place in Gothenburg to get away from the honking of car horns, the noise from trams and general buzz of the city. It is a huge park with wide open grass areas. Here you can play a bit of football, beach volleyball, mini golf or just lie around in the grass, talking, tanning, barbequing, playing games or just not do much at all. It is great for hot summer days and warm summer evenings and if you need a break from your hectic holiday schedule, Slottsskogen might be just the place to spend that break. Leave a Comment Directions: Go to Linnéplatsen for easy access to Slottsskogen.

by MickeH This is where Avenyn ends. It is a gathering place for many of the larger events in Gothenburg. When Gothenburg's ice hockey team, Frölunda Indians, won the national championship 2003, 30.000 fans gathered here to celebrate the gold. But demonstrations, concerts and all kinds of larger gatherings are common here as well. At Götaplatsen, you will also find the art museum, the Gothenburg City Library and the Gothenburg City Theatre. All and all it's a pretty cultural place. It's is also a great meeting place, and a good place to rest. Go up the stairs to the art museum, sit down and watch Avenyn bustling below. Götaplatsen is also home to Poseidon, or rather the statue of Poseidon, often seen on postcards from our fair city. Leave a Comment

Leave a Comment Directions: Gustav Adolfs Torg is located at the Big Harbour Canal (Stora Hamnkanalen) right in the heart of teh city centre. The nearest tram stop is "Brunnsparken".

The Crown Fortlet (Skansen Kronan) is one of the three fortresses which were built during the 17th century to protect Goteborg. Nowadays it houses a military museum of uniforms and weapons. The Crown Fortlet is situated on a little but steep hill which is also an excellent viewpoint. Directions: The Crown Fortlet is located on top of the Skansberget in the Haga district. The nearest tram stop is "Hagakyrkan". Leave a Comment

The Crown by MickeH There are two fortlets in Gothenburg, protecting our proud citizens from the evil invaders (read: the danish): Fortlet "The Crown" (picture) This fortlet can be found in Haga, high on a hill overlooking the city. The veiw from up there is exellent and the surroundings are very inviting as well, so it is well worth the pain of walking the many stairs up. The perfect picnic-spot really. Beside all that, the fortlet itself used to be a military museum, exibiting how the fortlet was used to defend us innocent souls from the evil bastards. Now it can be rented for special events such as weddings. Fortlet "The Lion" This fortlet can be found on the other side of town (duh...) a few hundred meters from the central train station. If you come into town by train you will see ít on your way in. A good wiev, but if you want to settle for one fortlet, choose The Crown. Leave a Comment Directions: Fortlet "The Crown" - above Haga Fortlet "The Lion" - Svingeln bus/tram stop

The Masthugget Chruch (Masthuggskyrkan) dominates the silhouette of Goteborg as it is located on a little hill. The national romantic style church has a 60 m tall tower and was built in 1914. Its location offers splendid views over Goteborg and the harbour area. Directions: The Masthugget Church is situated west of the city centre. The best way to get there is to take a tram to "Stigbergstornet". Form there it is still a 10 minutes walk uphill. Leave a Comment

The Fish Church (Fesekekorka) is the fish and sea food market of Goteborg. The building was opened in 1874 and resembles a church. It was an architectural experiment of military man Victor von Gegerfelt. A wonderful iron statue of a fisherman, a fish vendor and a dog can be found near one of the main entrances. Leave a Comment Directions: The Fish Church (Feskekorka) is located at the Rosenlundskanalen near the southeastern end of the city centre. The nearest tram stop is "Jarntorget".

The Sailor’s Tower by HORSCHECK The Sailor's Tower was erected to commemorate the sailor's who lost their lives at sea during the First World War. On top of the Sailor's Tower there is a figure of the sailor's wife. The 62 m tall column can be climbed for scenic views, but you already get a nice view of Goteborg's harbour area just from the steep terrace where the Sailor's Tower is located. Directions: The Sailor's Tower is located east of the city centre, just next to Goteborg's Maritime Museum. The nearest tram stop is "Stigbergstorget". Leave a Comment
