The Fish Church (Fesekekorka) is the fish and sea food market of Goteborg. The building was opened in 1874 and resembles a church. It was an architectural experiment of military man Victor von Gegerfelt. A wonderful iron statue of a fisherman, a fish vendor and a dog can be found near one of the main entrances.

Fish Church: Feskekôrka - the Fish church

Another of Gothenburg's most famous sights are Feskekôrka (in english Fish Church). Built as a church, looking as a church, but mostly used for selling and eating fish.
Gothenburg has always been a city full of fishermen, and the fish market was earlier very famous.

A couple of hundred years ago the fish was sold at many different places around the city, but in 1840 they started to sell all the fish at Fisketorget (Fish square). Later it was changed to what today is Gustav Adolfs torg. But when that square was developed into a bit more luxury square they moved the fish market again, this time to Rosenlund, where the Feskekôrka is today.

Due to the bad hygiene at the market money was set up, from a fund, for the building of a indoor market place in 1871. Three years later the building was finished, and quickly became very popular. The fund money was 75 000 SEK, which is about 8 000 euro. I sure wish it would be possible to build huge building for that money also nowadays... :)

In the beginning it was met with a bit of sceptical voices, and in a travel guide from 1884 a wellknown swede called the building "less beautiful than strange"...

Today it's one of Gothenburg's most famous sights. Shortly after the opening it was "re-named" from Fish Hall to "Feskekôrka" which is Gothenburg accent for Fiskekyrkan.

The first thing you'll notice when you get inside is the strong smell. For a newcomer it's like going straight into a fish... (yes, if one doesn't like fish one might say it stinks... ;) ).

There are four different shops, that sells fish, shellfish and other kind of seafood. There are also three restaurants where you can sit down and have a very nice lunch or dinner.

Seeing that it's called the Fish church, it's actually also possible to get married in here. Really not sure how though, or what the bride and guests would think about the smell...
Let's hope all of them are fish lovers... :)

Yep - you read it correctly. Fish is landed in the harbour and taken to the fish church along the canal most days. A food hall devoted entirely to fish and in the shape of a church. People get married here according to rumour (I have never known anyone) and there is a good restaurant inside. No need to tell you what it specialises in.

This place is actually a seafood market, but because of it's special architecture, it is called the Fish Church by the locals. The market hall was built in 1874 and is located by the moat surrounding the old centre of the city, conveniently not too far from the Göta River, for fishermen to deliver their catch.

Not much going on here, except the selling and buying of any possible sea creature caught in the sea off Gothenburg. There is also a café there, and it is worth trying some seafood there or somewhere else in Gothenburg. Nothing like freshly cooked prawns or some delicious fish!

  • Address: Fisktorget
  • Directions: Take a tram to Grönsakstorget, alight, and walk a few minutes towards the Göta River, eastwards, along the moat.

The Feskekorka, known as the Fish Church & built in 1874, is actually a fish and seafood market despite having a church-like appearance from the outside!

My hometown is not on the sea (unfortunately) althought both Adriatic and Tirreno are reachable in one hour and an half (fortunately): I am not used to fisherman's market at all and find them very attractive when I see some. The Fish Church is something spectacular: a covered fish market in a previous church!!! Of couse as a chuch is nothing unmissable but the market is huge and great and offers to visitors a nice atmosphere. You can find baltic and nothern see fishes of every sized and a wide range of canned fish as well. I find swedish shrimps very tasty, btw. Although not interested in buying any fish, just go there, have a look and take pictures. It deserve it.

Even though I hated the smell I liked this place. It's a market hall with stylish Scandinavian market hall architecture inside and church style outside.

Feskekôrka means fish church in Swedish.
It's a fish and seafood market and has this name cause the building resembles a church, there you can find the most popular product in Goteborg: the shirmps!!!
