The Masthugget Chruch (Masthuggskyrkan) dominates the silhouette of Goteborg as it is located on a little hill.
The national romantic style church has a 60 m tall tower and was built in 1914. Its location offers splendid views over Goteborg and the harbour area.
Directions:
The Masthugget Church is situated west of the city centre. The best way to get there is to take a tram to "Stigbergstornet". Form there it is still a 10 minutes walk uphill.
The church of Masthugget (Masthuggskyrkan Church) is perched on a small hill and overlooks the harbour. Its tower is 62m high and is one of the most striking shillouettes on the skyline due to its position and unique shape. Take a tram to 'Stigbergstornet.' but its still a short climb to the church itself, its a little out from the city center but it is within walking distance.
This church is a major landmark in the city and its silhouette is seen on many things from postcards to logos. Not surprising since it sits on the top of a cliff in the harbour inlet so it is one of the first things you spot coming from the sea. It also has a very characteristic tower. Getting up here will give you great city views too when you have seen the church.
This church is a little further out from the centre - although within walking distance - but as it sits high up and has such a high steeple it can be seen from quite far away. I was lucky enough to be staying in a hostel just at the bottom of the hill, about a 5 min climb from the church itself and went up there several times although I never actually ventured inside.
It was built in 1914 and designed by Sigfrid Ericsson. Due to its high position its used as a sea navigation point in Goteburg.
You can get fantastic views over the city from outside the church and particularly at sunset! I could have sat up there for hours if it hadn't been March and a trifle chilly!!
I found the area around the Masthuggskyrkan was a good vantage point to watch the sun set over the south of the city. This particular night was really clear and I rushed up the hill when I saw the colour of the sky from the hostel window but I think I really missed the best of it. It was still well worth it though!
It's one of the Göteborg's most famous silhouettes and sights. The tower, with 62 m. , is the first and the last that you see of Göteborg when traveling by sea.
Splendid viewpoint
