New Ullevi Stadium, Göteborg

It’s also a popular venue for big concerts, where for example Bruce Springsteen has played twice (first time the whole building was close to crashing, and a huge rebuilding had to be made), and also U2, Gyllene Tider, Iron Maiden and more and more.

After some rebuilding before and after the World Championships in Atletics 1995 the stadium now takes 40 000 spectators. There are now discussions if the three big clubs in Göteborg should move back to Ullevi, in order to get a more modern stadium.

Problem is, as the last time, that there aren’t enough spectators for that huge stadium. IFK Göteborg has in media 10-11 000 spectators at their league games. Örgryte 4-5000, and Gais 2-3000… Not too much for a stadium that has a capacity of 40 000…
In 2006 the will be the European championships in Atletics at Ullevi.

The stadium is very central, and by car you’ll be at the stadium one minute after you have turned off the highway.
By foot it takes 10 minutes from the trainstation, and there is also tram stops right outside the stadium.

On derby-games the supporters stands in different curves. IFK Göteborg-supporters always have sectors GHI, while Örgryte and Gais stands in VXY. That sector is also used as an away-sector when other teams are playing there.

The best seats for a neutral spectator is sector LM, or PQR. The later one better if the weather is bad, since there is roof at that section.
Tickets for derby- and nationalteam-games cost from 175 SEK (circa 18 euro) and up to around 400 SEK (40-42 euro).

Ullevi stadium was built for the World Cup in Sweden 1958, which among other games also was the arena where one of the semifinals was played (if only the final the final had been played in Göteborg Sweden had won, I'm sure...)

It was during many years the home ground for IFK Göteborg, Örgryte and Gais, but when the interest from the crowd went down during the 80-ties and beginning of the 90-ties it was clear for everyone that a stadium for 40-50 000 spectators were way too big Swedish games.

Instead the supporters to the three clubs, together with the clubs, decided to rebuild Gamla Ullevi (Old Ullevi) around 200 meters away from Ullevi. The new-old stadium was finished and ready to be used in 1992, and since then the three alliance-clubs have been playing there in the Swedish league, except for big derby-games. And for IFK Göteborg, also matches in the Champions League and Uefa Cup.

Ullevi has also been the venue for the Uefa cup-final three times (twice for IFK Göteborg, and also last seasons final between Valencia-Marseille) and the Cupwinners Cup once (Sampdoria won against Anderlecht), plus some games, including the final in the Euro1992.
Also the Swedish nationalteam uses the stadium quite often, 1-2 games every season.

The city is the place for a lot of large sport events such as the Gothia Cup, the worlds largest football tournament, with about 28,000 young players from all the world. The Ullevi is the largest stadium in the country with 43,200 seats of which 20,000 under a roof.
