    Science, animals and the rainforest

Universeum is the science center of Gothenburg, and probably the biggest one in at least the nordic countries.
When my dear american friend Kassy visited me I thought it was a good idea to bring here there, but I myself ended up really impressed by the whole thing too!

My biggest memory now, three months later, is the huge acquarium, with fishes, rocks and sharks. Days earlier we had also visited the Acquarium in Stockholm, but there wasn't even a competition between them...

Most amazing were the sharks (have always had something special for sharks) and the rocks, that wanted you to touch them. They swum around in a big acquarium, and swimmed up to the surface everywhere a person was standing to let the person touch it's back. They are said to be very curious and are supposed to really like the touching.

How it felt? Well, a bit special. :)

At Universeum there are also a lot of other exhibitions, like the one about the brain, or the space, the human body. Not to mention the place with a lot of nordic animals - specially those who lives in the water.

The rainforest-area is also special, with the temperature at the same level as in a real rainforest.

A visit at Universeum is an absolute must, but make sure you have plenty of time! Me and Kassy stayed there for about four hours, and I think that's about what you'll need to spend there to not miss out on anything.

It's really hard to describe Universeum I have to admit. You should go there yourself to see it, and I promise you won't get disappointed!

A hard place to describe... but I'll try...

Universeum is unlike any other place I have ever been to.

It shows you the world and teaches you about it. Universeum has different 'zones' - take the 'elevator' up to the top floor and then work your way down. First you go through 'Water's Way' which tells you about the people, animals and plants in Sweden.

From there you go into 'Ocean Zone' - one of the most interesting parts of Universeum. There is a large tank where you can go and pet stingrays! It was pretty cool, some of them float along the surface, and the others try to hide at the bottom of the tank. There is a tank called 'The Ocean Aquarium' and this is where the sharks are. I wasn't too sure about seeing the sharks at first, but when I was walking through the shark tunnel (made of glass) and you see them passing over your head - it is unbelievably cool! And there are many different kinds of sharks there, my favourite was one that looked like a baby whale shark (it wasn't a whale shark though) and also the Sawfish. I was also there at the time when they were feeding the sharks - word of advice, get there early if you want to be able to see - it gets crowded fast.

Then it's into the 'Rainforest' where it feels like a real rainforest, in otherwords it's very humid in this area. There are birds and butterflies (the biggest butterflies I've ever seen!) flying overhead. The rainforest shows animals and plants that are on land and in water as well. There are cards full of information to read on everywhere (in Swedish and English).

Other areas of Universeum are; 'Kaleido', 'Explora' and the 'Gallery'. All of these areas show different aspects of natural sciences and technology in an interactive way.

A trip to Universeum is a must when you are in G?teborg.

    The world in one building.

In universeum you get to explore everything from single cells to space. And in between: rainforrests and oceans, with sharks amogst other things.

But it's not all 'look but don't touch'. Here you can try experiments, test all kind of stuff, hands on.

But seeing that the ingredients to this big cake sometimes changes I find that it's better to direct you to their exellent homepage for better and more precise information on what can be found here at the moment.

    Address can be found below.

This impressive building houses the "Universeum" or National science discovery centre. It contains all kinds of environments and aquarium, experimental sections etc.

I was REALLY keen to go there as it sounded really interesting but my tight budget wouldn't stretch to the 110SEK entrance fee that day unfortunately. I'd have wanted to stay all day to get my moneys worth and not seen anything else! Its top of my list though if I make a return visit to Goteburg anytime!

A new building with several biotopes. You start by taking a cable car lift to the top where you are met by the Swedish highland flora and fauna. Then down to the rest of Sweden before you enter the aquarium with a huge shark tank. You can also stroke the rays in their tank. If you are interested in technology there is a hall showing you how satellites and other things work and to spin on the biology theme of the whole place, also exhibitions on the body. Much in these two halls are for school children but equally interesting for adults. After that it is time to see the snakes and then you are in the tropical rainforest with piranhas and exotic butterflies. The place is already famous all over Sweden for its attractions and as one of the most ecological buildings in the country too. Everything is built by recycled material or with the latest environmental technologies.

The different parts of the museum where you have the exhibitions first with forests, birds and a lot of other animals. After that you come to the aquarium and then the jungle with monkeys and snakes among other animals.

After this nature experince you get two floors full of experiments where you can challenge your body, create music and explore space. Fantastic fun for the whole family!
