Strömstad Things to Do

  • Crossing the border of Norway and...

Norway and Sweden share a border and the Norwegians living close to the border of Sweden flock to Sweden to buy clothes and food. It is much less expensive buying stuff in Sweden than in the very expensive country of Norway. The Swedes on the other hand flock over to Norway as the pay is higher there. The distance to Oslo is 117 km, but I was...

  • Nordby shopping center on the border of...

Nordby shopping center is the largest shopping center in Sweden closest to the border of Norway, or only 4 km from the border. Norwegians flock over the border to buy cheaper food and clothes - seeing that everything is so expensive in Norway. Swedish workers on the other hand flock over the border to Norway to work there - seeing that the pay in...

  • A view from the harbor

This is a simple view of the harbor that shows also the island of Furholmen, very close to the town. As you can see the weather was not so nice so I decided to not to take the boat to explore the coast near the town. Now I think it was a pity but this is a good reason to come back soon!

  • One of the largest street

Arriving in Stroemstad you can't miss to look at that buildilg. It is not that beautiful at the fist signt, becuase of the strange architecture in my opinion, but you must admit that is original. I thought it was a church but at the moment I think is the City hall.

  • Entering the little harbor

Stroemstad is basically a fishermen town, so the easyest thing to do is to stop by the harbor and to look at the number of boats bir or small, that come and go continouosly with their freight of fish and especially shrimps. You will discover a "lost and ancient world", for who lives in different countries as me, where people do simple things having...

  • Eat some good fish

The Cod is a nice place where young people can taste the famous Stroemstad shrimps. if you go there you must absolutely choose a dish of fresh fish that will be served with potatoes. The restaurant offers a funny "bussmeny", a menu that is a smart choice for who doesn't have so much time to visit the town. The restaurant offers also a buffet and a...

  • An impressive restaurant

When I saw this building I thought it was an Hotel but after I read it was a restaurant, maybe one of the most known and expensive in town. At the first sight I didn't notice that the restaurant has a little entrance that connects it to the promenade, directly on the little city's harbour. That is a good idea for enjoyng you meal there, looking at...

  • Cable boat to city center

From the area around Kebalviken and the Quality spa and resort area you can take an unmanned cable boat for a small fee. As a hotel guest you will be provided with a special card for this. If you dont use it you will have to walk to the end of a narrow fjord and back out again. It saves you about 30min of walking . You can always get the boat. If...

  • Kosterbåtarna/The Koster boats)

Kosterbåtarna takes people from the harbour in Strømstad and to 5 different locations on the islands of North and South Koster. We tried the boat in low season and paid 80sek for adults and 60 for school kids.(roundtrip)You should accept some more in high season. The ferry departs and arrives at least 5-8 times a day in high season.

  • Colorline from Strømstad to Sandefjord...

The trip to Sandefjord takes about 2,5hrs.The boats are fully equipped with buffet restaurant, cafe, bar and several taxfree shops. The company Colorline often offers cheap roundtrip fares that includes a night or two at a hotel. Good prices if you're Norwegian

    by 2rs Updated May 12, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This city is packed with Norwegians who has taken the trip to buy cheap food, alcohol and tobaco as the prices are much lower on such goods compared to Norway.

What to buy: Meat, alcohol and tobaco. That's if you're Norwegian, or on your way to Norway.

Strömstad Local Customs

  • This is fanaticism!

When I passed Svinesund and I touched the Swedish border I immediately noticed that there were something strange, look at the traffic lines! Normally you can find red&white or red&yellow signals, but in Sweden they are used to paint them using blue&yellow. The reason is only one in my opinion: a bit of sane fanaticism; remember that the Swedish...

  • Azhut's General Tip

Outside Stroemstad there is a wonderful Archipelago called Koster Islands. Tou can visit not only Furholmen but also Alaska, Styrsoe and Ramsoe or choose a sealsafari to Ursholmen lighthouse. On every island is possible to spend some hours on the rocky or sandy beaches.

  • For a little tour....

After arriving in Stroemstad you maybe would love to visit also the islands that stand not far from there. In that case you can take the boat that leaves every day (from june the 24th) the harbour to join Furholmen Island. The boat's name is Turlista M/F Birgit. I'm not sure about it but I think is possible to eat something after arriving in...
