Crossed Adders
In Sweden you can find 3 different kinds of snakes: grass snakes, crossed adders and smooth snakes. The only poisonous of these species is the crossed adder which lives in almost every part of Sweden. These snakes have an average length of 50 – 70 cm, they linger in forest aisles, at the edges of woods (preferably coniferous woods), bogs, heathland and stony areas. The colour pattern varies, most have some kind of zigzag dorsal pattern down the entire length of the body and tail, however. Gladly crossed adders naturally are not aggressive and they will avoid encountering humans. An incommoded crossed adder will most probably flee under a rock or into vegetation. Nevertheless they will bite when being massively hassled: don’t try to touch them and watch your step.
