One of the most famous Hockey players to come from this town was:

Mikael Andersson

In an NHL career that has spanned some 16 seasons and almost 800 games with five teams, Andersson has also accomplished an enormous amount in minor and international hockey. While he was a part-time member of the Buffalo Sabres from 1985 to 1989, he also won two Calder Cups, one with the Rochester Americans and the other with Springfield in the AHL. He has also worn the yellow and blue Tre Kronor sweater on numerous occasions, notably three times at the World Juniors, a rare feat.

Andersson has also played in three World Championships, including the 1992 competition when Sweden won gold, the 1991 Canada Cup, 1996 World Cup, and 1998 Olympics. During the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season he returned home to play a few games with Vastra Frolunda in the Swedish League.

The number-one ranked European player in 1985, he entered the NHL belatedly with the Sabres when he damaged some tendons in his heal while playing a touch football game with his Sabres teammates at training camp that fall, forcing him to the minors to work his way back into shape. His best season was 1991-92 with Hartford when he scored 18 goals, but after almost seven seasons with Tampa Bay he was traded first to Philadelphia and then the Islanders.

Following the 1999-00 NHL season, Andersson returned to Sweden continuing his career in the SEL.

Equipment: Hockey Skates, Hockey Stick, Lots of padding and of course a Helmet!

Niklas P. Andersson another Famous Ytterbyan

Niklas P. Andersson

Brother of the senior Mikael, Niklas also played with Vastra Frolunda before seeing action in the NHL, and he, too, played at the World Juniors for thee successive years, winning a silver in 1989 and playing again in 1990 and 1991.

Andersson was drafted by Quebec in 1989, 68th overall, and his first NHL game came as a member of the Nordiques on January 5, 1993 after he finally agreed to leave Sweden to try his hand in the NHL.

Niklas struggled to earn a spot full-time with the team, and the Nordiques let him go after nearly two full seasons in the minors. He signed as a free agent with the Islanders, played most of the next two years with them, and then signed with San Jose.

He spent most of 1997-98 in the minors, and this time the Leafs picked him up, only to trade him back to the Islanders for Craig Charron before he ever played for the Blue and White. The Islanders were no more impressed with him the second go round, and left him open for Nashville to claim on waivers on January 20, 2000.

Andersson went on to play seven games with the Preds before joining the Calgary Flames in 2000-01. The dimunitive forward would play only eleven games with the Flames while spending the better part of the season with the IHL's Chicago Wolves before taking his games overseas to Sweden in 2001-02.

Aside from his World Junior experience, Andersson has represented his homeland on numerous occasions including the 1991 Canada Cup, the 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2004 World Championships as well as the 1996 World Cup.
