In Airolo you can start various hike. One famous one is to reach Gotthard pass. This mountain pass is very famous and still today you can take a ride on a stage coach but you need to prebook and it is expensive. I remember a school excursion when we hiked down from the Gotthard pass to Airolo. If you want to hike to the Gotthard you need to follow the hiking sign "Sentiero Gottardo". The white-red-white tip of the hiking sign means that it's a mountain hike requiring proper hiking boots and equippment (rain/sun protection/food/water bottle/small first aid kit/information/map).
Alternatively the "Strada Alta" starts in Airolo. This is a long hike taking you along the mountain side along the Leventina valley visiting the higher villages.
Another popular hiking area is Lake Ritom. As you can see on the third photo there are many more hiking trails available.

In the village I saw this ice rink which seems to be built up every winter. You can hire some skates and play ice hockey. The fee for using it seems to be CHF 2.00.
