Since the Gotthard tunnel for the cars opened Airolo lost a lot of business as people head down the Motorway to reach their southern destinations faster. From certain points of the village you will see the big Motorway. Often during school holidays or public holidays there are long traffic jams and traffic stops altogether for up to 20 or more kilometers.

In Airolo there are also postbuses if you want to go to other villages in the valley. Also if you don't want to walk to the cable car that takes you to the Ritom lake area, you can use a bus.
