    Just next to the railway station you will find the monument to the victims of the Gotthard tunnel construction workers. The tunnel was built from 1872 until 1882. The monument was made by Vincenzo Vela (1820-91).

Airolo Transportation

  • By postbus

    In Airolo there are also postbuses if you want to go to other villages in the valley. Also if you don't want to walk to the cable car that takes you to the Ritom lake area, you can use a bus.

    Since the Gotthard tunnel for the cars opened Airolo lost a lot of business as people head down the Motorway to reach their southern destinations faster. From certain points of the village you will see the big Motorway. Often during school holidays or public holidays there are long traffic jams and traffic stops altogether for up to 20 or more...

  • By train

    From Zurich you can take a Interregio train through the Gotthard tunnel to Airolo. Every two hours you don't even need to change but there is actually an hourly connection. The train continues to Bellinzona and Locarno. The train journey from Zurich takes 2 hours.The train station in Airolo also has a kiosk and toilets.

    To use highways you must purchase and display a tax disc (vignette) on your vehicle. The cost is EUR 40

    The penalty for not displaying a disc is €80. They are sold at border crossings, fuel stations and post offices.
