Probably the best meals we had in the area were at this place. Though it looks like an unassuming train station inn from the outside, the inside was packed with happy locals enjoying the fresh, well-prepared food. On warm days, there is outdoor seating by the stream. Service was very good, Minifrosch was amused by the many available toys, and the food was first-rate.
Note: The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Favorite Dish: The menu varies based on what is fresh. I enjoyed the roasted duck, while Sara had some fresh pan-fried trout. The full range of Appenzeller beer is available in bottles, as well as a more conventional Swiss lager on tap. The wine list is impressive but (as you might expect) not cheap.

This gasthaus with a well-decorated exterior serves good quality local food at (relatively) reasonable prices. Choose from the outdoor seats in fair weather, or the dark, woody interior. Minifrosch was accommodated without a problem. Service was quick and friendly. On summer days, rows and rows of bottled beverages are arranged in various boxes. Just choose your bottle and glass, go sit down at an outside table, and a server will come by later to collect your money. Inside, especially on on a quiet, rainy day, you might observe some locals around a "Stammtisch" drinking beer and exchanging banter with the servers in a hard-to-understand (for outsiders) local dialect.
Favorite Dish: I had a pork steak with herb butter and french fries. Sara tried the Roesti with two fried eggs. Both were filling and tasty. Naturally, I availed myself of the local Appenzeller Weissbier as well.

It was a very nice sunday in spring and we had the urge to get some ice cream. The first place we bumped into was the Appenzell.
Favorite Dish: We let our stomachs decide. I went for a Ice Coffee (CHF 8.50) and my wife went for the Strawberry Tiramisu (CHF 9.50), which was the better choice by far. The Tiramisu is just excellent!
Also, try the home made ice tea!
