Interlaken - between 2 lakes

Favorite thing: Interlaken means " between the lakes " - as it is situated between Brienzersee and Thunsee.
Interlaken is one of the most important trafic-crossings of Switzerland, as from here several mountain-trains will start.

Fondest memory: Jungfrau-bahn going up the Jungfraujoch (3700 m)
Schynige Platte-train will start from Wilderswil (3Km off Interlaken )
The funicular to Harder Kulm
the mountain-trains to Lauterbrunnen
Brienzer Rothornbahn - take the train at Interlaken Ost for Brienz

Axalp - A great place if you like to ski

Rent a Chalet

Favorite thing: From Interlaken trains will take you quickly to Grindelwald,Mürren and many more places, where skiing is really great. Personally I am a fan of Axalp, simply because I am not a sophisticated skier and also for that fact, that Axalp was the first place, where I started to work in Hotel-Business and had a great time after a few problems with the strange dialect in the beginning...

Fondest memory: This is one of the chalets on Axalp (high above Giessbach). It was built by private investors, who use it for a few weeks themselves and rent it the rest of the year to tourists. Its about the price of a hotel-doubble-room per day, but the atmosphere is a different of course and up to 8 persons might sleep in that house.
Take a look at this web-page for some chalets in the area around interlaken :

4000 inhabitants AND 14000 hotel-beds ...

going by steam to the Brienzer Rothorn

Favorite thing: Interlaken is just a small village with 4000 inhabitants & 14000 hotelbeds , set in a beautiful surrounding and its main advantage is the fact, that you may start plenty of great excursions FROM Interlaken, and besides this you may go to the cinema, various night-clubs, discos, go to the Kursaal etc. and of course there is Mystery World for all fans of Erich von Daenicken's theories...

Fondest memory: The town and its houses are not really a great sight, with a few exceptions.
Check for the best deals regarding area-tickets for the trains around Interlaken, it is quite confusing to see all the different offers and you will see it will be hard to decide, what to take !

Interlaken - between Brienzersee and Thuner See

Favorite thing: Interlaken is right in the middle between Brienzersee and Thunersee
And both lakes are combined by the river Aare, but ships cannot go through all the way, as the river is partly very small and narrow.
When you want to get from one lake to the other, you may take the train, it takes just 4 minutes and costs 2,20 sfr one way , BUT normally NO conductor will ask for your ticket...
There is always enough time for the train after arrival of a ship at any of the lakes, you may always catch the next ship at the other lake !!

Fondest memory: On my picture you may see the most beautiful ship on Brienzersee : "Jungfrau" , decorated in "Tourist-style" with Edelweiss, cow-bells etc.

Interlaken - Unterseen

Unterseen

Favorite thing: Unterseen - north of the river Aare - is the old part of the village, and will mostly have houses like these ones

Interlaken - south of the river - consists mostly of Hotels

The town has about 3000 inhabitants and more than 10.000 hotel-beds

Fondest memory: Please be careful - Interlaken has 2 different trainstations :

Interlaken West for trains arriving from Bern/Thun - these are trains of international standarts, Intercity etc...

Interlaken Ost for trains arriving from Lucerne / Brünig Pass - these trains use a different track-size and so it will end here in Interlaken. At the same time Interlaken Ost is also the starting-point of trains in directions to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren...
In front of the Ost-station you will find giant parkings - for a parkingfee of 8 sfr per day !

Hoehematte in Interlaken
1 more image

Favorite thing: At the end of 19th century the owner of Grand Hotel Victoria Jungfrau had given the big meadow in front of his hotel as a gift to the town of Interlaken, and sentenced, that this very big field never will be changed, never put houses on it, or alter anything for a longer time. - Sometimes they have a circus or fair there, and have to remove some stones or a bit of ground - afterwards it will always be restored originally again. And so most of all hotels in Interlaken can offer their guests the famous JUNGFRAU-BLICK - the view on the famous mountain(s)

Fondest memory: It was great to see the paragliders landing directely on the Hoehematte opposite of the hotel Jungfrau Viktoria. A bus takes them back again.

During FÖHN - do not smoke in the streets !!!

NO smoking in the streets during foehn-winds

Favorite thing: This is NO JOKE !!!

Smoking is absolutely forbidden in the streets of Brienz - and also rather dangerous during the FÖHN - ( foehn in engl.? ) - a warm wind typical for alpine areas, even in wintertime.
The old wooden buildings obviously catch fire easily and it would be a pity for them !

Fondest memory: I saw this sign posted on many of the old wooden houses, as the wind may blow away your thrown-away-cigarettes and the houses might easily catch fire.
