 1. Chairs set up for a concert in the courtyard by Nemorino, 3 more photos Photos: 1. Chairs set up for a concert in the courtyard 2. Poster announcing Monday evening jazz concerts 3. Ramp to bicycle parking in the basement 4. Bicycles in the basement On summer evenings in July and August the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) in the Old Town is used as an open-air concert venue for classical music and jazz concerts. At first I was highly impressed to see that some far-sighted medieval architect had built a bicycle ramp to the basement, several centuries before the bicycle was even invented. But it turns out that the original purpose of the ramp was to roll cannons up and down. GPS 46°12'3.58" North; 6° 8'49.03" East Leave a Comment

Photos: 1. Parc des Eaux-Vives 2. Entrance to the park and the Scene Ella Fitzgerald The Parc des Eaux-Vives is a smaller neighbor of the Parc de la Grange on the south shore of Lake Geneva. The building up on the hill is a fancy French restaurant which seems to be very well known among people who are interested in that sort of thing. For the rest of us, the park is the site of a summer music venue called "Scene Ella Fitzgerald" which specializes in free concerts of "Musiques Colorées" -- flamenco, rap, jazz, pop, funk, reggae, chanson and world folk music -- on summer evenings in July and August. Ferdinand de Saussure lived here by Nemorino From this plaque in the Old Town I learned that the great Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) was born in Geneva. Since I used to be a student of linguistics I was well aware of his importance as the creator of the 20th century theory of structuralism. It turns out that his famous book A Course in General Linguistics, which was published three years after his death, in 1916, was based on a course he taught three times at the University of Geneva between 1906 and 1911. Photos: 1. Uni Bastions 2. Library and museum This university campus was built between 1868 and 1871 in an attractive park near the opera house. The university library contains a Rousseau Museum with manuscripts, books and musical compositions by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, but this museum was unfortunately closed for renovation when I was there. 5 rue De-Candolle, 1211 Genève GPS 46°11'56.20" North; 6° 8'40.37" East Leave a Comment

Jorge Luis Borges lived here by Nemorino From this plaque in the Old Town I learned that the Argentinean author Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) used to live here in Geneva at 28 Grand'rue, just a few doors down from where Rousseau was born, but of course two centuries later. "Of all the cities in the world, of all the homelands that a man seeks to earn, Geneva seems to me to be one of the most likely to bring happiness." -- Jorge Luis Borges in his book Atlas. Brunswick tomb by tommix This tall and architecturally ornate stone folly is the high-Victorian tomb of a duke of Brunswick. It stands out on the right bank of the lake, just in front of Richmond Hotel. The eccentric Charles II, Duke of Brunswick spent the last three years of his life in Geneva and at his death in 1873 he bequeathed his fortune to the city of Geneva on condition that they bury him in a Mausoleum which would be the exact replica of Verona's 14th century Scaligeri family Mausoleum... Ariana by Nemorino The Ariana, which is up at the north end of Geneva near the United Nations, houses the Swiss Museum of Ceramics and Glass, which is said to be the only museum of its kind in Switzerland, and one of the most important in Europe. CERN is where the web is born. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, a scientist at CERN, invented the World Wide Web (that you are currently using!). The Web, as it is affectionately called, was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automatic information sharing between scientists working in different universities and institutes all over the world. You could visit the world's largest particle physics laboratory. A visit lasts approximately half a day. It consists of an introduction to CERN presented by one of our guides, followed by a film projection and a visit to one of the experimental areas and/or to an accelerator on the surface. The CERN Visits Service organises guided tours free of charge, in several languages, from Monday to Saturday, at 9:00 or at 14:00. Reservation is obligatory. Access: CERN main site is close to Geneva airport on the Meyrin Road. From Cornavin railway station take bus direction CERN unti CERN stop (about 40 minutes). Leave a Comment

A charming village in the city... Relax by strolling through this nice little city and animated streets with plenty of good addresses to eat, to drink and to dance. Some of my favourite addresses in Carouge: - Restaurant au Vieux Carouge (27 rue Jacques-Dalphin) for their famous and delicious Swiss Cheese Fondue specialties in a very popular and friendly athmosphere. - Café du Marché (Place du Marché) a wide wine selection carte to combine with some creative and original dishes. A pleasant athmosphere and service. - Au Chat Noir: nice place for a beer, for a chat;-) or live concert... Leave a Comment

The countryside of Geneva could be worth to visit. Especially if you are a wine amateur. Each Saturday you could visit (as I did) some producers which will offer you free wine tasting at their domains. You could also rent a bike for an beautiful tour through the Geneva vineyards as Bourdigny > Choully > Peissy > Russin > Dardagny and stop in the winery of your choice.
