View across the lake by masc4s For some excellent eating deals you won’t go far wrong dining around the Conavin train station area and Paquis district. Just thought I’d mention the “Manora” open daily until 9pm at 4, Rue de Cornavin in the "Placette" department store. They have an excellent and inexpensive self-service restaurant. Next to the train station at 24, Rue Voltaire “The Quartier” is a very nice tearoom and bakery where you can take out some of those lovely cakes. If you like kebabs then 29, Rue de Berne is for you. Five minutes walk from the station L’Istanbul is open every day until late in the evening. They serve tasty and very big kebabs at a reasonable price. A couple of streets down towards the lake on Rue des Pâquis there’s a brilliant reasonably priced tearoom called the “La Vouivre” at number 21. Unfortunately it’s closed on Monday and Tuesday. The Rue des Alpes runs from the railway station down to the lakeshore passing the Rue du Berne and Paquis on the way. The “L’Amir Beyrouth” at 12, Rue des Alpes serves very good chicken or lamb "shawarmas" to take away for less than CHF15. The Paquis district is definitely one of the livelier neighbourhoods. Les Paquis means the meadows and recalls a time when livestock used to graze here. Today there are cigar and chocolate shops, boutiques and some artisan' workshop outlets. Restaurants, bars, discos, and a strip of flashy adult live entertainment where the “dancers” are actually prostitutes. Bizarre establishments such as Chez Leyla at 35 Rue des Paquis serve light meals, coffee and cocktails for $8-$15 while you sprawl on their low sofas; smoke a water pipe and sample tobacco flavoured with different dried fruits and spices. Definitely different! Minutes away on the lakeshore at 34 Quai du Mont-Blanc the “Buvette des Bains des Pâquis” is open for breakfast at 7am and doesn’t close till about 8:30pm. You will have to pay CHF2 to get in but the meals are very cheap. Les Poubelles de Geneve by masc4s On the south bank of the river the Old Town climbs above the Jardin Anglais, this is the area that contains a lot of the city's charm. Natural beauty is one of Geneva's strongest assets, from the lake, which provides some 6 miles of shoreline to the many fertile parks and private gardens. All set against a backdrop of the snow-covered alpine peaks. The Place du Molard is home to some splendid cafes and restaurants with open-air terraces. It’s also the place where the famous Geneva flower market resides and the clothing and book market on Place de la Madeleine, which are open daily. Most of the others are only twice a week. Do NOT miss ‘Chocolats Rohr’ at 3 Place du Molard, they have chocolates ‘to die for’. If you miss this one, just round the corner at 42, Rue du Rhone is their second shop. Hans Rohr has been making chocolates in Geneva since 1936. Chocolats Rohr have a worldwide mail order service, except for the USA due to the US Customs regulations on food imports. They will also send a gift box to anyone you request. In addition to the range of milk and dark chocolates there’s also a choice of cookies. The actual production is now done in Carouge at Rue Vautier 6. The story goes that about 40 years ago Hans’s wife started nagging him to make a distinctive Geneva speciality. After much deliberation and to shut his wife up he decided to replicate the city’s characteristic garbage bins in chocolate. Les Poubelles de Geneve, as they are called are an amusing local specialty. They’re cup-shaped chocolate shells with covers that conceal a delicious chocolate truffle-like filling, which is made from chocolate, sugar, corn syrup, and cream. Scrumptious but not cheap. Depends on how many you buy! Why not pick up a few garbage cans to take home!

Swiss Cheese Selection by masc4s I know I keep banging on about supermarket and department store restaurants. But if you want the best meal deals at unbeatable prices during the day then dine with the locals dine. The most popular food chains in Geneva are Migros and Coop Migros is cheaper because they sell mainly own label goods rather than brand names. So if your not fussy and looking for picnic stuff this is the place to shop. However they don’t sell alcohol but the Coop does. But they do offer language classes sports, trips and all kinds of leisure activity courses at a good price. Migros have different size stores M, MM and MMM. Most neighbourhoods have a single M store. Next to Cornavin train station, on Rue de Lausanne, there’s a MM Migros called Centre Commercial des Cygnes. There’s a triple M Migros store at Balexert, inside the mall. Bus 10, 9 or 29 will get you there. Another ‘triple M’ Migros is located in the Planète Charmille shopping mall, which is located behind the Place des Charmilles. Bus 6 or 19 will get you there. The Coop sells brand name food and alcohol at good prices. If you like certain brand name goods, this is your store. Pick Pay is another good shop to buy brand names and especially wine and spirits, which are sold at excellent prices. They have wine “on special“ every week. Migros and the Coop have in store self service restaurants at unbeatable prices. I don’t know about Pick Pay. In Geneva all the shops are open every Thursday until 8pm. Another alternative is to go to the airport, where there is a Migros open 7 days a week till 8pm. The bank at the airport also has good hours. At the Cornavin railway station, the shop “Aperto“ is open 7 days a week from 6am till 8pm where you can always get at least a sandwich but it is more expensive for the convenience! The shops in France are open later than in Switzerland, and many of the goods are cheaper there. However be warned there is a limit to the amount of goods you are permitted to bring back to Switzerland on a given trip. It's my last discovery - the restaurant is quite new. It's a small place owned by swiss-japanese couple (Marie-Pierre and Hiroshi). And the food is excellent!
I don't have any favorite dish because I didn't try everything yet. But the "specialité du chef" - a deep fried pork is excellent. And ginger ice cream also! The City of Geneva by masc4s There are many low cost cafes / bistros and restaurants situated around the main train station Gare de Cornavin, and in the nearby Paquis district, or near Rue Ecole des Médecins off Plain de Plainpalais. Spread out, on the right bank opposite the harbour, there are some enjoyable walks along the Mont-Blanc quay where you can watch the boats docking at the landing stages. This is where the French exile Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand settled, at the Hotel des Etrangers, 22 Rue des Paquis near the Palais Wilson, which was the original site of the League of Nations until 1936. It’s also the place, where in 1898 Empress Elisabeth of Austria was assassinated by an Italian radical wielding an ice pick, just at the landing stages where you board the lake steamers. The Café de Paris at 26 Rue du Mont-Blanc is a Geneva favourite, but not for vegetarians! They only serve one dish entrecôte steak in a herb-and-butter sauce with fries and a salad for CHF35. I guess they’ve had enough practice because it’s an excellent meal and only seconds from the station. The Expresso Club on Rue des Pâquis is open weekdays for breakfast, lunch and dinner until 2:00am. It’s just a tiny bar with three tables. This little local spot is usually packed with an international crowd who know where to get the best pizza, salads, and pasta dishes in town. There’s also a large selection of vegetarian food. The ovens are going till late for late working customers. It's a nice spot for a coffee and an afternoon newspaper read as well. CHF 14 - 20 for most dishes on the menu. The non stop all day service is great at the Café Art's. The drawback is it only has a limited menu of salads and pasta dishes. Then again, the cost is only CHF8-20.
Traditional Geneva cooking is earthy and rich. Here are some local favourites. "Cardoons" are a local speciality, they're a locally grown type of artichoke baked in a gratin cream and Gruyere sauce. Try them, they're not bad. "Longeole" is unsmoked pork sausage with cabbage flavoured with cumin or fennel seeds. If you like cabbage this is quite good. It should be eaten with potato gratin. "Pieds de cochon" are pigs feet and "fricassee de porc" is pork simmered in red wine. Both are Geneva favourites. Pigs feet are not really on my favourties list but the fricassee is nice. Fillet of perch, omble (char) and trout fresh from the lake are Geneva favourites and a popular refreshing dessert would be something like compote of pears. The canton of Geneva produces its own wine and most restaurants serve the basic Swiss wines, which are mainly white. A lot of restaurants are closed on weekends, particularly on Sunday night... you have been warned! by chancay The ambience here was like in a little pub, tables all close together so that there was a feeling of just one big group all together. As everywhere in Geneva it was so international there, people from everywhere around.
We were told that this is the best Fondue place in Geneva and we haven´t been dissapointed.! The cheese Fondue was just GREAT!! We had white and rosé wine with it. The outdoor cafe street scene by masc4s Geneva is Switzerland’s second largest and most international city, yet surprisingly small. It's a stylish town with a rich cultural calendar, a place to be, and be seen. In short, people here like to flaunt it, and they take pleasure in dining out. The international community forms about a third of the 180,000 residents of greater Geneva and there are a huge number of restaurants catering for the hungry diners of a city this size. Instantly mouth-watering world cuisines spring to mind of which there are many. With more than 1300 restaurants within the greater Geneva area alone, your restaurant of choice is never far away. The restaurant business here prides itself on quality, which is, without a doubt demanded from its cosmopolitan regulars. The ones I’ve been in certainly “cut the mustard”! However, never forget you are in the most expensive city in an expensive country and the finer eateries don’t come cheap Swiss and Italian restaurants are everywhere along with many first-rate French restaurants. Ethnic groups have also contributed enormously to what is a growing variety of food from other cultures. Recently there’s been an explosion in sushi bars highlighting the increasing demand for the slightly curious and more unusual cuisine in addition to a wider choice of restaurants. Due to this trend and with the multitude of quality options now available it’s become increasingly difficult to set apart any one particular restaurant as outstanding; there are so many. The good news is that there are many gastronomic delights still to discover from chic fashionable bistros to noisy local cafes. Tipping in Switzerland is not a pre-requisite. A service charge is included in the bill. However if you have received first-rate service, showing your appreciation by leaving the wait staff an additional 5% or so of the total is always appreciated. The house specialty is a ½ spit roasted chicken, provençale potatoes, French dressing salad (mainly lettuce) for a princely 13.90 CHF - just over £5/ about US$10. They do lamb the same way for a mere CHF14.90 (but don't expect a half sheep!) Smokey (but isn't everywhwere in Geneve?) but a relazed atmosphere and mixed, mostly youngish crowd. Don't be put off as it alwayss looks full from outside but there is a narrow yet long, long way to go in to further tables . Had 500ml / ½ litre house Swiss white wine at 17 CHF and other incidentals, total was 63 CHF for two, just the wrong side of about £12 / US$22 each for a supposedly expensive city.
House speciality! Click for the other pictures to see how appetizing this looks! Also Chez Ma Cousine is nigh inflation proof - Lonely Planet Switzerland (2000) states it is CHF 12.90 for the house special, still only CHF 13.90 seven years on ! Great place. Au Jeu De L'Arc is an absolute gem to knock yourself out. Despite the short 4 night stay we visited twice on the first and last nights. Everything from the grilled sea bass and accompaniments to the raviolis were exemplary. Excellent Genevoise white wines. This was the most we spent in Switzerland but certainly no more expensive than Scotland, or the UK for that matter, and a quality you would scour cities for. Some prices Antipasto - cold meats for 2 CHF 22 / UK£9 / US$18 Ravioli aubergines (meal size) CHF 25 / UK£10 / US$20 Sea bass CHF 39 / UK£16 / US$30 Tiramisu CHF 8 / UK£3 / US$6 Chateau du Crest (Swiss white) CHF 45 / UK£18 / US$34 per bottle
The sea bass was the best I have had . There are five raviloi dishes, and a sixth with a taste of all five. Anywhere in the world.
