Due to the fact that Switzerland is small, it's not too difficult to get to Neuchatel. There are 4 airports in the area: Geneva, Basel, Zürich and Bern. From all of them you can get to Neuchatel by train: they run at least every hour, and often overy half hour too. To Geneva and Zürich airports there are direct trains. Bern is the nearest city, but there are few flights and the airport is not linked by railway. For Basel airport you'll likely have to change once at Olten. I don't think the airport is linked by rail directly, but don't quote me on this
Le funambule is a funicular that links the railway station of neuchatel and the "downtown" area down by the lake. Whereas it's not much use going downhill through the old town, it's quite nice to use to go back uphill, since the town is set on a steep-ish slope. It costs 1 swiss franc and tickets need to be bought at the appropriaate vending machines, since the whole funambule is operated mechanically.
