    Castle of Chillon is interesting

    refurbished Castle of Chillon

East of Lausanne is the medieval castle, the Castle of Chillon on Lake Geneva ( or Lac Leman). We spent over half a day visiting the various rooms, etc. including the dungeon-type room. I remember the 'toilets' which were just an opening dropping down to the lake 100 metres below.

    Nyon

Nyon (between Geneva and Lausanne) is a historic centre with roman remains. These corinthian columns were found and installed on the edge of a buff of land at the end of the Promenade des Veilles Murailles (Old Walls Walk). Once again floral decorations for 700 years are also seen. From Nyon you can cross the lake to the French side to see Yvoire a beautiful medieval geranium-filled town - well woth the boat trip and visit.

    Musee de l'Hermitage

This museum is set in an old residence in the upper part of town. It is surounded with gardens and woods and is not only a beautiful place in itself but also offers an untakable look onto the lake.

The museum houses different kinds of exhibits from different epochs. Usually painting, you'll also find sculpture exhibits or even cultural. Check what's on when you are there with the tourism office.

Whether on your way out of the museum or during your strole around the gardens, stop off at the little restaurant-patio opposite the museum's entrance for a nice cup of tea and a freshly made cake.

Summer pic-nic on the shores of Lake Geneva

    by e-katarina Written Nov 11, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In summer evening, whether week-end or week day, the large parks and beaches at Vidy are full of people hanging out in large groups having pic-nics. All grills are going, whether the public grills set up in the parks or the disposable grills, or even small fires. But that's not all.. people escape the heat of the city by taking a dip in the lake, some groups bring guitars and play music,.. As darkness creeps in, candles and torches light up and illuminate the later hours.

    Go to the beach!

    The lake from the beach

During the nice Summer days, you can head to one of the various beaches on the lakeside. If you are adventurous you might even want to jump in the water, but beware: the temperature is very cold!

Most of the beaches have pedalos to rent, as well as windsurfing, small sailboats and motorboats, etc...

Among the nice beaches I would recommend are: Vidy, Pully, and Morges.

From Port d’Ouchy we took day trip to Evian, a nice French town across the lake, famous for its mineral water (it takes less then an hour to cross the lake in a boat).
See more about Evian in my travelogue.

CHATEAU DE GRUYERES. With the Dent-de-Broc mountains looming in the background, one beautiful vista follows another as the path from the train station leads to the castle. Between 11th and 16th century, 19 counts lived within its walls. Now it's a home for the International Center of Fantastic Arts.

A cog wheel railway runs from Vevey to LES PLEIADES for views of the vineyards, the lake and the Alps. Halfway up is BLONAY site of a 12th century chateau and terminus of a tourist steam railway which runs every weekend May-Oct. Great for steam enthusiasts.

While Arolla is already Off the beaten path, the Cabane des Dix is Off the beaten path of the Off the beaten path.
You have to climb up a slope, get down a vertical ladder, hop around on a glacier, climb a rock formation and after a while you are there.
    Look! It's way up there!
I created a travelogue if you are interested to know how to get there.

    Vevey vista

Vevey is a lovely lake side resort near Montreux - more laid back and less touristic, more my kind of place. Lovely views across LAke Geneva to the mountains in clear weather too.

The beach seems to be right on the main path wherever I go. Even if you prefer more active way of visiting the city, still go and relax on the beach and admire the views to die for.

VEVEY - the world headquarters of Nestlé – all that lovely chocolate and the resting place of Charlie Chaplin. It is the quieter neighbour to Montreux but has good trolley-bus service there.
