Fondest memory: We almost didn't come here on this trip. But with the weather cloudy in Kandersteg, we decided to take a chance and head to Saas-Fee. While it looked foreboding at first, the clouds burned off and we had a wonderful day. We also had the good fortune to decide to take the cable car to Felskinn and hike across the glaciers to the Britannia Hütte. The snow views were amazing, as these photographs attest. Despite a few slips and falls on the icy trail (and the accompanying bumps and bruises), this had to be the best day of the trip.

Favorite thing: Saas Fee has some of the friendliest marmots I have ever seen. Just below the restauarant at Spielboden many of these alpine creatures can be seen and they are so used to humans now that they will come and take food from you - they especially like carrots and nuts. This one had a good sniff at the food I held out but must have been a fussy so and so as he refused it!
Saas Fee Glaciers
Favorite thing: Like any glaciers they are receding from the village. They didn't sem to reach the edges of the village as much as I remembered from our much earlier visit.. This picture taken with the zoom shows how they are shrinking back.
Glacier Close up
Fondest memory: The easy access to the glacier world of Saas Fee is amazing. Especially using the Langfluh gondola above Spielboden - the views are spectacular. The icy green-blueness of the ice is really evident and spectacular spikes are formed as the ice is folded up - this was my most favourite shot I think and deserves to be seen in full size ;-)
Fondest memory: So many to choose from here but the walk to the Britannia hut was memorable for the clear blue skies, the sunshine as it warmed (and burned!) our faces as we did this shortish hke - energy sappig at altitude though! The views of the glaciers and mountains around was stunning. We love to walk in snow so this was a pefect combination.
Best view of the village
Favorite thing: I think the best aerial view we had of Saas Fee was from Langfluh, looking down from the top cable-car station. You could see how spread out the village was and across the valley to Saas Grund and Hohsaas above that village.
Favorite thing: Saas Fee is built tin the tradtional Valaisian style and these barns on their "mushroom stilts" are typically of the area. They stand guard almost, the entrance to the village just opposite the post bus station. Saas Fee resisted a road being built here for many years and these barns are a statement to maintain the village feel.
Favorite thing: The glacier village Saas-Fee is in the canton of Valais in the south of Switzerland. Saas-Fee is part of the German speaking Valais and is on 1800 meters over sea level near the Italian border. I found the glaciers to be more impressive here than the ones of Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland.
Favorite thing: The idyllic, car-free, glacier resort of Saas-Fee is situated at an altitude of 1800 metres above sea-level, This mountain village has an amazing setting, with its glistening glaciers, like tongues of ice creeping down to its outer edges. No less than 13 four-thousand-metre peaks encircle the village at the foot of the glaciers like a shell Outside of Switzerland its less well known than touristic bustling Zermatt but the hiking is just as good with levels of difficulty to suit all.
Favorite thing: As well as admiring the beautiful floral displays on the many balconied hotels and houses you can also see some ornate wood work. Wood carving is a tradition in many swiss villages and they love to display their artistry.
- Arts and Culture
Favorite thing: The village is fairly compact and car-free - its reached by post bus from Brig, the journey taking about 1 hour. It only takes about 15 minutes to walk from one end of the village to the other. They have good sport facilites too - just see in the pic!
