To reach Saas Fee you have to take the post bus from Brig up the Saastal Valley. The journey takes about an hour - there are direct services as well as more local ones which stop at the villages on route. The road winds its way up through lovely mountian scenery to SaasFee, the most southerly of villages in this region. Most people from Brig will head to Zermatt on the glacier express instead and never see this lovely valley with its hanging waterfalls. Reservations are not necessary to travel up but need to be made for the its downward journey (free of charge in the bus station) - mainly to ensure space for people to catch connecting trains for the airport.
Service is the usual swiss efficiency and on arrival at Saas Fee the bus will enter the bus depot. Above each bus stand is the time of next departure and destination.

If arriving by car you have to park in car parks on the edge of the village as it is traffic-free.

To go gaga over the glaciers around Saas Fee then a gondola trip to the panorama viewpoint at L?ngfluh is a must. The gondola is towards the back of the village and stops at Spielboden first where the friendly marmots can be fed. The gondola station and mountain restaurant is literaly perched on a crag overlooking Spielboden. In this pic taken from our walk to the Britannia Hut you can see the rock it sits on and the glacier spikes around it.

Hotels will have little electric buses to ferry your luggage to and from the bus satition. Cars are not allowed in the centre and have to be parked at the large muli-storey car park on the edge of the village. There was also an electric cart to ferry you from the centre to the Felskin car-car valley station free of charge - normally a 15 mins walk to the edge of the lower glacier area.

A change from the usual horse and carriage rides in alpine resorts is the Husky ride. A team of huskies will pull you on a sledge around various paths around the village of Saas Fee.
We opted for a day trip to Zermatt instead which was less expensive! Novel but a bit dear for an hour - approx 48 Sfr!

Really spoilt for choice of cable-cars in Saas Fee - another one is the single-cable gondola to the Hannig - the sun-terrace of the Saas Valley. The top station is at 2350m above sea-level and there are numerous hiking options for all levels. Strolls through the larch forests for less proficient hikers. A special attraction is the “root trail” from the Café Alpenblick to the top station at Hannig. You will see 7 "root" men with wise words along the way. Paths here are wide and not too steep - suitable for both young and old. The panorama terrace with its lovely view of the Mischabel chain is the perfect place to relax. The ecological trail to Spielboden has boards with information about the ecology of Saas-Fee. Hannig is also the starting point for the ibex trail and for more challenging hiking to the Mischabel Hut.

  • Felskinn Cable car - Saas-Fee
    Felskinn Cable car
    by sandysmith
Towards the back of the village the large Felskinn cable-car goes from the Biffig section of Saas-Fee to Felskinn, which is at 3000m above sea-level. The Alpin metro gondola also stops here - although in the summer one or the other will be running only. During our visit Felskinn was running but was closing on our last day when the other gondola was opeing. Felskinn is the starting point for the hike to the Britannia Hut see my off the beaten path section for details.

There are several cable-cars in the Saas Fee Valley - if you intend to use them a lot then its worth investing in a pass for the week - Sfr 171 in 2004 - its a lot but you'd probably end up paying more for individual tickets.
To check current prices go to
    Sass-Fee site

Some ot the activities included in the pass are:
all cableways in Saas Valley and the Metro Alpin
Postbus from Stalden-Saas to Saas-Fee and Mattmark
1 admission to the ice grotto on Allalin

guided hike on the ecology trail or the Zuckmayer trail (prior booking at the Saas-Fee tourist office obligatory)

    "Feeblitz" toboggan/bob-sleigh run (1 ride)

Gspon mountain path (transport by postbus and aerial cableway)

Pictured here is the cable-car up from Saas Fee to Felskinn.

The web link provided below is for maps of the area so you can see where the cable-cars are and where they go.

From Felskinn you can then take the underground metro to the Mittelallain - the highest underground railway of the world.
At the top enjoy the vistas from the revolving restaurant here - complete rotaion in 1hr - and explore the ice palace - which is also the biggest ice grotto in the world with its volume of more than 5500 cubic metres !

Since trains don't run to Saas-Fee, the easiest way to get there is by Post Bus. Both express and local buses run from Brig and Visp; the bus marked "Saas-Fee Direkt" will get you to your destination about 15 minutes sooner. If you're coming from Zermatt, you can change for the bus at Stalden-Saas. Buses are covered by Swisspass.

UPDATE: Buses to Saas-Fee now depart from Visp every 30 minutes to accommodate traffic arriving in Visp from Bern via the new Lötschberg Basis-Tunnel.

RESERVATIONS. If you have a European timetable, you'll note the Brig to Saas-Fee trip is marked "reservations compulsory." This is only true for the return trip. If you're making a day-trip, when you arrive at Saas-Fee, go to the reservations counter (follow the crowd), and pick up a free reservation for the bus you want to take back to Brig. Miss your reserved bus? Don't worry -- you'll probably be let on the next one after all passengers with reservations have boarded. At worst, you'll have to take the local bus. If all else fails, you can get a free reservation for the next available bus.

Here's an opportunity to take a cable car high above Saas-Fee to the station known as Felskinn... and, if you want to, take the world's highest "subway train" to the icy perch of Allalin.

Felskinn, at an altitude of 3000 meters (about 9,850 feet), offers some magnificent views of both the Fee and Chessjen Glaciers. The station itself has a cafeteria and facilities. You will also notice a path along the glacier; if you take this, you can make your way to the beautiful outpost known as the Britannia Hütte after a fairly level but technically challenging hike (this is what we did).

Also at Felskinn, you can transfer to the "Metro Alpin" and climb up to the 3500 meter (about 11,500 feet) Allalin station. At this height, you can enjoy a rotating restaurant, a cafeteria, and the Mittelallin Ice Pavilion.

Fare from Saas-Fee to Felskinn is CHF 27 one-way, CHF 35 round trip. Fare from Saas-Fee to Allalin is CHF 53 one-way, CHF 69 round trip. 50% discount with Swisspass.
