Fondest memory: Our last day hike in the Saastal was a gloriously sunny day and the hike we had chosen - a high altitude hike from Kreuzboden to Saas Almagel had memorable views - perfect choice for our last day here. We started from high above Saas Grund at Kreuzboden (reached by cable-car of course) and led over the mountain pastures of Morgstein and Malliga and on over a paved track to a wonderful scenic view. The beginning of the hike followed the alpine flower path. Many alpines can be enjoyed along the route and several boards displayed the flower nearby and information about their flowering season etc... These blue alpines were such a vivid colour - should have paid more attention to the info board though :-S
At last, some 2.5 hours since we strated off from Kreuzboden we began the descent to the Almagelleralp - it was quite a zig-zag path down and the hut always seemed to be a way off, but eventually we arrived.
For the next adventure on this hike around from the valley here around the Almagellerhorn with its adventure trail you should go to my Saas Almagel page please!
Favorite thing: For those walking the flower path fro Kreuzboden you will have come this far on the hike - so plenty of flowers and wonderful vistas but now your path descends here.....for Almagel continue around the mountain.
Fondest memory: The boulder park didn't take long to cross and around the corner of the mountain the path became much easier and level. There was a great view down to our base in Saas Fee too - wow felt almost like a bird up here! It gave a good vew of how Saas Fee is separated from Saas Grund by the gorge too.
Favorite thing: As we contoured around the mountain though we had to traverse a boulder park - its not as bad as it looks and every few stones there were clear red paint marks showing the way. The stones were quite large and mainly flat to step on too - it was quite safe really.
Fondest memory: The high altitude hike continued over the Grundberg mountain with its rare alpine flowers to the heights of the Almagell valley. At first the path is fairly straightforward, gently ascending as you admire the alpine flora and not forgetting to look behind to see our pathway.
Favorite thing: Further on this high level path to Almagel we had wonderful views of the Mattmark Dam - much clearer than when we were closer up during our visit there earlier in the week. It was lovely to have a better view of it.
Fondest memory: During the hike to Almagel from Saas Grund we kept stopping to admire the stunning views - this was looking back down the Saastal Valley. During the course of 3 separate hikes we had covered paths from the Mattmark Dam right the way down to Gspon, virtually the lenght of this valley.
Fondest memory: We encoutered more sheep than humans on this hike - the way I like it, not that I'm anti-social or anything. Loved the brown ones with white patches, they were really cute and definitely not plastic!
Fondest memory: As we contined on the path to Almagel the scenery kept unfolding before us, the cloud at the beginning of the day had cleared and we enjoyed a clear view of the Allain peak above Saas Fee.
