TAKE NOTICE:
This tip is about SIERRE a village very close to SION,
so a perfect place to spend some hours and easy to reach by train.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wandering among nice houses in the Old Town of Sierre, I noticed some pretty decorations hung on the walls or on the doors/windows.
It was also funny to see this happy family in a small niche (pic. n°1).

Sometimes the owners were proud of showing wooden items outside their dwellings.
This form of working wood is chip carving in which knives are used to remove small chips of wood from the project surface in a single piece. This carving is normally used for the decoration of everyday objects, such as milk stools, neckband for bells, wooden spoons or walking sticks.

It is always a pleasure to see streets and buildings traditionally festooned with Swiss flags and banners.
Flags are flown also from private houses and commercial buildings as a display of patriotism.

A local beer brand in the Canton of Valais is the or Bière Valaisanne (French name) or Walliser Bier (German name).

The brewery was founded in 1865 in Sion. In 1972 it was acquired by the Feldschlösschen brewery which is Switzerland's largest brewery.

Popular beer types include their lager and the "Blonde 25" which is a fashionable light beer. It was launched in 1992 and became a huge success among young people.

20 Swiss Francs note

Although Switzerland is situated in the centre of Europe it is not a member of the European Union nor does it have the Euro as currency.

The official currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF). The smaller denomination is called Rappen (100 Rappen = 1 CHF).

As all countries around Switzerland use the Euro as official currency, many shops and restaurants catering to tourists will accept payment in Euro but probably not at the best rate.

You can get your Swiss Francs from many cash points or exchange offices all around the town. Credit cards are widely accepted.

Proud to be Valaisan...

The Red and White team (official colors of FC Sion and Valais by the way) was founded in 1909. The first match was held at the Planta Square against Aigle (Vaud) and the local team won by 3 vs 2!

In 1962, Sion was promoted to the Swiss League (LNA or Super League) and won for the fist time the Swiss Cup in 1965.

Since 1968, the team played at home in the Tourbillon stadium (capacity of 16'500) located in the East area of Sion. Our local football team play an important role to unify all regions from our state (German part and French part).

The club became a legend by winning 10 times the Swiss Cup (1965, 1974, 1980, 1982, 1986, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2006 , to be continued ;-)

In 2003, after financial problems, FC Sion was relegated in the second division, but after 3 years the club became again a major team. In 2006, the FC Sion becomes the first club of the second division to gain the Swiss Cup. Sion is back and for a long time!

HOP SION!!!
