L'enclos de Valere: L'enclos de Valère

One sunny day in August I had lunch here with VT members Tripack and Zajem. We had a table in the back of the lovely garden terrace. The restaurant is upmarket but they had lunch specials, so called "assiette du jour". We all opted for those, which came at CHF 21.00 each. To drink we shared a litre bottle of mineral water at CHF 10.50.

Our outdoor stay was very pleasant and I wouldn't hesitate to eat there again. Service was friendly.

    TAKE NOTICE:
This tip is about SIERRE, a village very close to SION,
so a perfect place to spend some hours and easy to reach by train.

We had a WINE TASTING SESSION at the OENOTHEQUE of the CHATEAU DE VILLA in the same manor where there is also the homonymous restaurant.
After wandering for km around vineyards, this was a good way to enjoy a glass of Valaisan wine.
The cellar has a lot of different types of local wines also available for sale

    UNFORGETTABLE DINNER!
If you like cheese (and raclette), this is an address you have to remember.

First the manor itself is very nice (XVI-XVII Century) – a nice view for your eyes

Second as soon as you open the entrance door you will smell a divine perfume of cheese – a pleasure for you nose.

Third and the most important thing: the dinner!. A raclette feast with 5 types of cheeses from 5 different alps in Switzerland (they provide you a map to show where cheeses are from).
    Your taste will be happy
It's an awesome experiment that will re-awaken your palate but don’t forget to choose what is your favourite cheese. It will be your 6th dish!

L'ENCLOS DE VALERE: A Pleasant Break

A pleasant coffee bar-restaurant along the cobbled street to Castle of Tourbillon (so in a perfect location after the trudge to the castle). Behind the red facade, a nice garden full of trees and flower beds is a good place to drink something fresh (or cold) or to eat something.

    Grill Pizzeria Don Carlos

On our second day in Sion we visited the restaurant Don Carlos for a late lunch.

As it was a sunny day we sat outside on the pedestrianised street at a small table with comfy chairs. It was just the perfect place for a lazy lunch break with some people watching.

The menu offers a good variety of meat, pasta and pizza dishes as well as some seasonal specialities.

I opted for a pizza Santa Lucia, which was covered with tomato, mozzarella, ham and oregano. Pizzas come in two sizes. My small version was tasty and cost only 12 CHF. To drink I chose a grapefruit lemonade.

    My beef steak with chips
    2 more images

As the weather was quite nice on our first evening in Sion we decided to have dinner somewhere on an outdoor terrace.

Many places were already occupied, but by chance we found a free table on the pedestrianised street at Trattoria de Valère.

They are obviously specialised in Italian cuisine, nevertheless typical local Swiss meals are available as well.

I decided for a beef steak with chips which was excellent and with 26 Swiss Francs reasonably priced. A tasty fresh salad was included in the price as well.

To drink I opted for a big shandy (5,00 CHF), which came with the local beer "Bière Valaisanne". It was just the drink I needed on a lovely summer evening.

La Table d'Hotes: For a tasty experience...

by Tripack Updated Aug 4, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Under new management since 2008.

    Let's try in English...
The Summer 2006 discovery… after having climbed the spiral staircase, let turn the head by these exquisite savours resulting from the original creativityof the cook Damien Germanier.
Within a intimist framework with few tables arranged in a large unique room on the ground of chess-board, the tiny cusine is jsut behind the cooper walls. The waiter will help to make your choice between the discovery menu (surprise) or other specials. A pleasant option is to combine each plate with the selected wine vintage, a real delight.

Tripack and HORSCHECK having a Kilkenny

We came to the St. James Irish Tavern just after midnight for the last part of our VT meeting. The place was nearly empty as it was on a Wednesday and the barman seemed a bit tipsy.

Downstairs they have a disco, but we didn't check it out. It seemed to be for the much younger generation.

We sat in the outdoor section of this spacious restaurant to enjoy a small pizza each for a late lunch. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible but the toilet is downstairs.

The Don Carlos is open everyday from 11 am till 11 pm.

Favorite Dish: I ate a small Pizza Tropical which in other places would be a Hawaiian. Pizzas come in two sizes. The small size of mine cost CHF 12.00 (August 07).

    Au Boulevard

    Tripack and HORSCHECK

The Au Boulevard is a popular café-bar with an outdoor seating section in the warm season. The drawback is that you are only allowed to sit outside until midnight, so that the neighbours get some sleep.

We had a drink here as part of our VT meeting.

    my lasagne
    1 more image

In the warm season the Trattoria de Valère has an outdoor terrace with 40 seats. Of course we ate outside. They have two rooms inside seating 25 people each, one is with the bar.

To me the restaurant made the impression of not really being an Italian restaurant but run by some other nationality. They have other dishes as well with grilled meat or fish.

The restaurant is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Favorite Dish: I ate a Lasagne which came with a salad that was included. The Lasagne was ok but a bit plain.

    La Sitterie: Fine cuisine

by Tripack Updated Aug 20, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I remember of a splendid bottle of Ardévine from Michel Boven (Ardévaz cellar in Chamoson) accompanying the refined meal. For once in fact the meal accompanied the wine, a perfect marriage. The only remark about this rather modern and sober framework lies in the squeaking plastic chairs when you move… Otherwise the gastronomical symphony did not know others distort notes; -)

Le Jardin Gourmand: Do not miss their Carrousel of desserts

by Tripack Updated Aug 20, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Gastronomical side in a wintergarden to take its time to enjoy a neat kitchen or brasserie side to taste the specials of the day well cooked. The whole accompanied of a fine local nectar from our sunny vineyards.

    Favorite Dish:
Le fameux carrousel: pour goûter avec modération... à chacun des desserts de la maison. Un régal pour les gourmands.

The famous carrousel: to taste with moderation… with each dessert of the house. A treat for the greedy ones.

Without any doubt the best terrace of the summer. A must to refresh your mind and palate during the warm summer days within a green environment close to the Valère and Tourbillon castles. To access there take the Castle street a steep but worth it walk as you will be welcome by a nice relaxing terrace. Specials of the day (3 choice) or menu à la carte is available at reasonable prices. The website disclose online the current meal offers, far enough to motivate you to take some heights.

A good address in the city centre (thanks to our host) to eat something.
Someone of us ordered a dish of Penne all'arrabiata, someone a tropical pizza and the others some tropical salads. Yummy!
