Grindjisee by sandysmith An easy broad path from Stellisee leads to Grindjisee (2334m) another of the mountain lakes where a reflection of the Mattenhorn can be found on a clear still day. Its an idyllic lake fringed with pine trees and is a wonderful place for a picnic and bathe - be warned water is icy! These mountains lakes are easily reached just a short hike from the Blauherd or Sunegga mountain transport systems so don't miss them.

Stunningly scenic Stellisee by sandysmith Well it was an unplanned trip from Saas Fee during our holiday in July 2004 that brought us back for a day trip to Zermatt. The weather was perfect we had 7 hours and I knew exactly which walk I wanted to do - the five lakes tour! We took the underground funicular to Sunegga again, then the cale-car to Blauherd and another to the Rothorn. From here we gradually walked all the way down to Zermatt and enjoyed most of the 5 lake views :-))) The Stellisee (2536m) must be one of the most photogenic places to capture the Matterhorn. A few ripples on the lake meant not quite a reflection but it was so beautiful here I did not mind and couldn't complain with such a picture postcard landscape.

On one of our hikes we found the Thomas Woodbine Hinchliff Monument by chance. It is neither located near one of the main hiking trails nor did we see any signs. Thomas Woodbine Hinchliff was born in in 1825 in England and died in 1882. He was a mountaineer, writer and president of the Alpine Club from 1875 until 1877. Directions: The Monument to Thomas Woodbine Hinchliff can be found somewhere northwest of the Riffelalp, just inbetween the Riffelalp and the tracks of the Gornergrat train. Leave a Comment

Findeln by sandysmith After the hike around the lakes we'd planned to take the sunegga funicular down ..but we still had plenty of time before the mini-bus was due to take us back to Saas Fee. So we walked through the village of Findeln where some of the best views of the Matterhorn can be had and down through the forest to the centre of Zermatt (another 1.5 hours) What a contrast to the previous year -so glad we extended our hike here. The village is so quaint and picturesque and worth a vist in itself.

The end of the train ride. Looking at the Matterho by dabidc The 40 minute train ride is over, the near summit is reached after the train has climbed slowly along the tracks, using a cog wheel and track when required. Signs abound that work is going on at the Hotel above the station. There is a path around the hotel and a view point is reached that more or less avoids the construction equipment. Many poeple are on the top viewing point, signs are placed on 4 sides showing the mountains and the glaciers that can be seen in any particular direction. To the south it is a series of glaciers from Gornergratgletscher, then Unter Theodoedulgletsche to Theodulgletscher almost touching the Matterhorn. Behind Gornergrat to the north is Findelngletscher. Across to the north of the Matterhorn is Muttgletscher. Elevation at Gornergrat is over 3600 m, in Zermatt we were at 1620m. It is a bright white world out there. Leave a Comment

The top of the Gornergletscher. by dabidc The top of the Gorner glacier is flanked by the Monte Rosa at 4634m on the right and to the left there is a rock face in the foreground. The next high mountain to the east, the left could be Strahlhorn 4190m, the Matterhorn is 4478m.and is much further to the right. About midway between the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa is the Klein Matterhorn at 3883m., with the Breithorn in between at 4164m. One map of the range of Mountains shows another mountain where the Monte Rosa appears to be, it is Dufourspize, with Monte Rosa immediately above that name. The height is given as the same, 4634 m. My grey cells are working overtime, I believe that Monte Rosa is the Italian name, since Italy is over the mountain tops and Dufourspitze is the Swiss name in German. I do recall that skiers can easily cross from the Swiss side to the Italian side and have a ski pass for both slopes of the mountain range. Leave a Comment

Down the tracks from Gornergrat. by dabidc The station at Gornergrat, in spite of being surrounded by construction to make the area more attractive and also to spruce up the hotel, offers a wide terrace to view the mountains and glaciers to the south. One advantage in getting to the top early on a sunny day, is the fact that direct sun is not shining on the camera lens and presenting some not so good photos, especially looking south. There is a restaurant andshop and snack bar and terrace for dining outside the resaurant. Then a bridge over the tracks will take you up past the hotel to another open area, higher than the first. Extensive views are possible all around the summit. I will place many more photos in the travelogue section, some of views from and at this top station. It is also possible to have your photo taken for a fee, with one or two St Bernard Dogs. Definitely Off The Beaten Path. A goat, yes, but . by dabidc, 4 more photos So I decided to visit the Rothorn Paradise using the undergound train. There were a few hopeful passenges. The station is near the City Hotel and we were told the upper station at Rothorn was not in service. So go to Sunegga. Stay near the lower end of the two or three coaches, when people disembark , walk down a few steps, walk along a passage , then take the elevator to the top exit. Outside was not pleasant, the cloud hung around, then slowly a bright period, no sun just a little brighter. What to do, it was dry, so take a hike. Buddy. The hike was around a small lake, the Leisee. A place for pic nics and family gatherings on a fine day. Then on into the cloud, the path was easy to follow, several signs, so I had no concerns about being lost on the mountain. hahaha. The photo of Findeln shows the cloud, normally that small village overlooks the valley carved out by the melting waters of the Findel Glacier, with trees across the stream. Possibly views of the Matterhorn. But not today. Photo 2. A look back at Lei See ( I think ) as I walked over the hill towards the upper valley. Photo 3. Then as I walked along, following the path, passing some guys repairing a small building, suddenly the cloud lifted and I was able to see the valley below and the small man -made lake, probably Moosjsee. I had hope to get to Gridljsee for any views of the Matterhorn that might be reflected in the waters of that lake. Photo 4. Then a few minutes later the cloud descended and the Moosjsee washidden. At that point the Goat appeared, and I decided the return journey was the best thing to do. I ended up at the restaurant at Sunegga having a bowl of soup to warm me up. I was not alone many others were sheltering from the cold. Now it was time to return to earth out of this eerie cloud. Leave a Comment Website: www. matterhornparadise.ch

The cloud begins to disappear. by dabidc I am using the Off The Beaten Path section for the simple reason to celebrate the great day that my third day in Zermatt brought for me. I will record much of the day on the Gornergrat with many photos, hopefully for your pleasure as well as mine. I was on the train that left around 10.00am, quite full, but whaht can you expect, when the previous two days had many visitors to Zermatt wandering around town, they wanted to be out and about and on the mountains. The advice is sit on the right hand side for the ascent, for the views. Leave a Comment Website: www.gornergrat .ch

The trees seem to lean with the top of the mountai by dabidc An advantage that the train has over the cable cars, is the fact that to agin elevartion the train meanders around , sometimes the valley is to the right, at times to the left. Another point worth noting is that there are no cables popping into your photos and at least in some trains the windows slide down, thus eliminating the reflections found on photos taken from a train. The train does have an overhead wire system so that is something to be aware of. Leave a Comment
