Free map and hiking brochure
  • Tip Rating:
  • Zermatt's Tourist Information offers many free helpful brochures. You should definitely pick up the town map of Zermatt which not only has a detailed street index, but also gives rough directions to the surrounding places like Zmutt or Sunnegga paradise. If you are planning to hike, the free "Adventure in the mountains" brochure is useful as it lists more than 30 suggestions with the main facts and figures for hikes from Zermatt. The Tourist Information Office of Zermatt is located at the Bahnhofplatz (train station square), just next to the train station.

Warm - WARMEST clothes for winter!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't bring too many things as you'll be taking at least 2 trains to reach Zermatt. Carrying luggage on trains and finding a place to store them can be a nightmare

Bring warm, sporty clothes. In winter, everything is about apres-ski so unless you want to join the fur wearing crowd, you're ski jacket and some trousers is the best choice for all hours. Warm gloves and a bennie or hat is a must especially at the ultra cold evening hours. For shoes we ended up wearing our trainers most of the time with some thermal socks. For fashion conscious women a great choice is some fur lined, suede boots. A couple of chunky wool sweaters and some long sleeved cotton shirts underneath will keep you warm outsides but will allow you to strip to something cooler when you're in the heated indoors.

Zermatt has several pharmacies but be sure to bring you're own medication if you're using any

A good, compact digital camera is a must. When you're dressed layered like an onion and carrying you're skis you'll find that pocket cameras are the way to go. We had a bulky digital and it was a pain to stop and take it out of our backpacks every time we saw a good photo op...which was every 2 minutes.

Warm clothing, a windproof jacket, a walking stick and solid footwear are a must, whatever the time of year. And, of course, don’t forget your sunglasses, sun cream and your cap/hat . Keep in mind that weather conditions could change quiet quickly at these high altitudes.

Stout shoes/hiking boots are a good idea in such a beautiful hiking area....plus you need to escape the crowds in the town.

And don't forget an umbrella and water proofs. When it rains...it rains ...and then it snows!

I don't know about the heart of summer but starting at the end of August make sure you have a warm jacket and maybe even gloves if you go to the top of a mountain.

Dont' forget camcorders or cameras, the views are fanstastic.

    Change in altitude
If you are heading up to Gornergrat or any place else with higher altitude, make sure you dress warm enough even in summer. I was fine, in August, with a fleece pullover and a light windbreaker. Hiking boots with treads are a good idea if you are doing any hiking or even if you're not in event the pavement is slick. Sunglasses and a hat might be useful as well.

Several people mentioned sunscreen but so little of me was exposed that I didn't feel I needed it. But if you are hiking and plan on spending several hours outside, it's a good idea as you burn easier at higher altitudes.

There isn't too much wind but the air is still freezing cold. Be sure to layer up and bring sun glasses!

    Pack for the high peaks
Wheels on bags are preferable, although most hotels will pick you up at the train station if you call them.

Wool and synthetics are ideal. Cotton will be useless if it is cold and you get wet. Sunblock is essential as is eye protection and a hat. Gloves and windproof/waterproof outer gear are most desirable since the weather can change at any time, especially at the high elevations.

Aspirin might be desirable due to the high altitude. Some people have difficulty adjusting, and headaches can occur.

    Absolutely bring a camera.

Trekking poles or a walking stick will help.

If riding the Gornergrat train or one of the cable cars, bring a map showing the route so you can know your options along the way.
