One of the nice scenic tails: Zermatt-Ried-Patrullarve-Tuftern-Sunnegga- Blauherd-Stellisee-Grindjisee-Moosjisee-Findeln-Zermatt (around 1000 height meters and app. 30 km)

This is a nice day tour with lots of scenic places to stop. Or get some additional Downhill Rothorn-Blauherd-Sunnegga. Most of the trails are nice gravel roads. Just a few places are a bit more difficult for not so used bikers. If you get tired you can almost everywhere take a cable car back. You will find a lots of Restaurants along the tracks so a cool drink is never far away. Make sure you will do stops on Stellisee. It offers great views of Matterhorn.

On the Downhill parts you will have to wear a helmet by law. Bring a biking map as well as you are actually only allowed to bike on dedicated trails (all trails that are wider than 2 m). You can get maps at the tourist office for 2.- Fr.

    Hiking
I'm not so into sports, so can't be of much help here, but I must say, this would be a beautiful spot to hike, and there are plenty of people taking advantage of it.
Even without being a hiker, I really enjoyed our walks in the sunshine, as each time we changed trains there was usually some waiting time.

If you are not a skier you can still enjoy the mountains by walking up to Furi or taking the cable car from Zermatt to Furi and then walking down. Recommended for families or less sporty guests sunrise trips, horse-drawn carriages, concerts, libraries (for books and games!), cinema, art galleries, museums, exhibitions.
Along the way Matterhorn is always within sight on a clear day.

Numerous mountain huts and restaurants offer refreshment. The mountain railways and cable cars carry you effortlessly to the higher walking routes.

    End of the Day
A small glass of champagne at the end of the day on trail down from mountains.

Actually the glass of champagne was quite expensive.

    Steep Mountains
If you ski in Zermatt you have to ski over to the Cervinia Resort on the Italian side. To do this you need a sunny day with not one cloud in the sky. Then you have to be lined up at the lower cable car before it opens .
Once you are on the cable car you have to get to the top ( Theodulpass) as fast as possible ( no loitering) .Then it is down to Cervinia.

    Skiing Through Streets of Zermatt
One of the nice features of Zermatt, in the winter , is that you have the ability to ski through the streets on your way back to your hotel. There is no guarantee you will be 100% successful , unless your hotel is close to the river.

    Cervinia
This is the Italian side of the Matterhorn . From the top it is a 10 to 12 km run to the Italian ski resort , Cervinia . It is not that interesting on the Cervinia side compared to Zermatt , and the Cervinia village is quite bland . Trying to get back to Zermatt can be a problem sometimes .. High winds can develop around the Matterhorn and on your way up to the top you may find , when you reach the mid station , that the last cable car has been shut down . This is not what you want to discover at 2:00 pm in the afternoon . That is why you have to leave Zermatt early in the morning .

    Best Value for the Matterhorn
When skiing Zermatt it is a lot cheaper towards the end of the season, when the snow has melted everywhere but the mountains.

Also, buy the international pass, only about $10 more and you get a lot more scenery and slopes, well worth the money. Basically, the pass allows you to ski both Switzerland and Italy through various ski lifts that take you to the other side of the mountains.
(I ended up in the Italian town at one point thinking it was Zermatt and was in for a interesting surprise.)

*You will need to present a passport to buy the international pass.

You can find everything you need at the local ski shops. I don't know about snowboarding but the ski gear was really good and very cheap considering the area.

    Skiing Around the Matterhorn
Zermatt in the winter means skiing . Although the Zermatt village is second to none the skiing is over rated except for the views. Due to the geography the ski area is broken into three distinct zones and circulation between is limited or non existant .
