Zermatt Cemetery
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Zermatt Cemetery is home to many graves of unlucky mountaineers who died during their attempts to climb the various mountains including the Matterhorn. The graves are often decorated with mountaineer equipment like pick axes and the headstones state the circumstances of the death. Among the many famous people who are buried here are also the Swiss mountain guides Peter Taugwalder Senior and Junior who were members of the group of the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn. Directions: The Zermatt Cemetery is situated just inbetween the western bank of the river Vispa and the St. Mauritius Church.

The King of The Alps: The Matterhorn
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Matterhorn is the emblem of Zermatt and its shape could have inspired our Swiss chocolate master for the creation of the Toblerone. These impressive sharpen faces and edges look like as a Swiss pyramid but by made the Nature. This so particular and fascinating peak is probably the most photographed mountain in the world and certainly by me (see my travelogue;-). 38 of Europe's 76 four-thousand-metre peaks are in the area surrounding Zermatt. A quick historical reminder: the 14 July 1865 the Matterhorn was climbed for the first time. Edward Whymper was the first person to reach the summit (4'478m) together with two Zermatt mountain guides, Peter Taugwalder father and son, a guide from Chamonix, Michel Croz, and his English companions, the Reverend Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas and Robert Hadow.

It's not exactly you could miss it but you can take a cogwheel up to higher elevation for a closer view of The Matterhorn. There is a restaurant and gift shop up there. Warning The air is thin up there and can cause some people to become light headed.

    Hinterdorf
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hinterdorf is the oldest part of Zermatt where you can still find a few of the old wooden houses dating back to the 17th and even 16th century. Among them are warehouses and storage buildings for sausages, bread and dried meat. An old pig sty can be seen as well. Most of the wooden houses were built on supporting posts to keep mice and rats away. Directions: The Hinterdorf is situated in the very heart of Zermatt's city centre. The street with all the historic houses is called Hinterdorfstrasse.

    My Favorite Hike in Zermatt
  • Tip Rating:
  • OK, here's my hike! Before I begin, PLEASE NOTE that this is a moderate to strenuous hike, and takes 4 to 5 hours. As always, be sure you have a map, and check with the tourist office to get advice on the latest trail conditions. If the weather's clear, get an early breakfast and head for the GornergratBahn. Purchase a 1-way ticket to Riffelalp (CHF 17.60, 50% discount with Swisspass or Swiss Card). At Riffelalp station, cross the tracks and exit in the direction your train is going. Then follow the trail and the signs to "Grünsee." After about 45 minutes, you'll find yourself at a house (the Berggasthaus Grünsee) and a lake. From Grünsee, continue on the trail, following the signs to Stellisee. After about 90 minutes, you should be at the Stellisee. If conditions are right, you'll get the "Money Shot"! If you still have energy, continue on and follow the signs to the Unterer Rothorn. After about 90 minutes to 2 hours, you'll arrive at a restaurant. Enjoy the view, have lunch, and take the gondola/alpine subway combination back to Zermatt. If you're tired, follow the signs to Blauherd. From there, you either can take the gondola to up to the Rothorn, or down to Zermatt.

    Chapel Riffelalp
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Chapel Riffelalp is also known as Seiler Chapel. It was built after plans of the hotel pioneer Alexander Seiler and inaugurated on the 3rd July in 1887. The lovely chapel has good acoustics and is therefore often used for concerts. It belongs to the Roman Catholic church of Zermatt. Directions: The Chapel Riffelalp is situated at the Riffelalp (2200 m) in the heart of Zermatt's hiking region. The easiest way to get there is a 5 minutes walk from the Riffelalp station, which is served by the Gornergrat train.

    Chapel Z'Mutt

The last renovations of the building took place in 1981. It belongs to the Roman Catholic church of Zermatt. Directions: The Chapel Z'Mutt is located right in the heart of Z'Mutt, which is a little hamlet south west of Zermatt's town centre.

Before you head right on up to the Rothorn though have a look at the view of the Matterhorn from the restaurant terrace at Sunnegga - it almost seems close enough to touch from here. Perhaps closer than at Rothorn but of course you do not see as much of the other peaks. So have a coffee and enjoy the view before you head for the connecting gondolas.

    St. Mauritius Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • The tower of the Roman Catholic St. Mauritius Church dominates the city centre of Zermatt. The church was built in 1913 after plans of the architect Adolf Gaudy. It houses a few altars dating from the 18th century. Directions: The St. Mauritius Church is located at the Church Square (Kirchplatz) in the heart of Zermatt's busy city centre.
