St Bernard Trap
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although a tourist trap...it can turn out well. At the top of the Gornegratt you can pose with the St Bernards for a memorable picture with the Matterhorn right at your back. Photos can be checked and bought in the Alpine photoshop in the shopping hall near the station.

    Zermatt main street
  • Tip Rating:
  • Zermatt's main street is quite a tourist trap. Its not that wide and is thronged with myriads of visitors during the day perusing the many shops and cafes.

The best option is to escape the crowds and head for the hamlets around upper Zermatt - much more peaceful.

    The Matterhorn at home

  • Free the Matterhorn!!! - Zermatt
    Free the Matterhorn!!!

Here everything seems good to do some money as selling small piece of the Matterhorn. Just make the count if every visitors (+/-200’000 per year) buy one stone (+/- 100 grams) as souvenir = 20 tons of Matterhorn are exported annually ;-) Hopefully that they can’t sell the local alpine air till now. But in fact, could be a great idea… I keep you inform as soon as I’m running the business!

Please, Save the Matterhorn !!! Click here to get trapped I want my piece of Mattherhorn It's remember me the business about the Berliner Wall piece but this time it's Swiss made;-)

A good alternative for an almost free souvenir: 1) Look for a small stone on your garden or in a field, preferably with an approaching triangular shape. 2) Print out your best Matterhorn picture 3) Put all these items in a large glass and enjoy your home Swiss made souvenir 4) You have save up around CHF 25 ;-)

Don't shoot Barry (Saint Bernard dog)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Of course the picture could be great, but its price is less fun and I’m not sure the Barry grandson will get any benefit about it (what a boring job for him).

...the best souvenir are kept in mind and not on paper… (hopefully for me as I missed so beautiful photos during my travels ;-)

Tripack's alternatives: 1) Higher risky alternative: try to take one photo with your own camera but it could be tricky to be on… and be ready to run away quickly as the local photographer is taking care of his own business! 2) Less risky alternative: do a photo montage (very easy with computer) or take your favourite mascot and take together a great photo with the Matterhorn in background for free!

    Kleine Matterhorn
  • Tip Rating:
  • On sunny blue sky days many people head for the Kleine Matterhorn cable car for the stupendous views of the alpine panorama from there.

nothing for it but to join the crowds, try to go as early as possible. Make sure you get your pic taken with the Matterhorn in the backround - it looks so different from this angle.

    DO NOT DRIVE INTO ZERMATT!!!
My buddy and I drove into Zermatt at night, and we did not see the signs at the edge of town. We were driving slowly through the streets, and wondering why everyone was looking at us. We were stopped by some people that warned us that there were no cars allowed to drive in town, or else there could be a large fine. As we were turning around to leave, a couple of cops stopped us. They demanded a heavy fine on the spot. They wanted around $200 dollars, but only got a few dollars from us. Thankfully my friend's ATM card was not working at the particular bank he was 'escorted' to, so they did not get any more money from us. The whole deal seemed crooked to me--paying a fine in cash right at the location. Anybody ever heard about this?

stop at where the signs tell you to, and take a shuttle or rail into Zermatt.

Should you do any shopping, take your time and investigate prices. They can vary very much from one store to another. For the same item we had a certain price in a store and right next door it was almost 50 percent less.

    St. Bernanrd dog Photos
To me this is not a tourist trap. You stop on the hill while skiing and have a professional photographer take several pictures of you with the dog and the matterhorn in the background. There is no obligation to buy at all, just goto the store right next to the train station and look at them, if you like them you can buy each picture for 15 chf..I bought 4.
