Things to Do

see the mosaic and leave

detail of the mosaic

the best thing you can do in chiasso is just head for the border and leave.. or else if you're italian, cross the border for a quick chocolate, cigarettes and marijuana shopping spree... and then leave as fast as you can. And while you're at the border, on the swiss side, do not miss the nice blue-ish mosaic on the wall. No one knows exactly who made it, but it's the most (and only) remarkable sight of chiasso!

Vecchia Osteria Seseglio: don't miss the desserts!, Chiasso

piccolina Says:  The restaurant is a building that at the time of renovation was a farmhouse but in the more distant past it had been used as a stopping place en route for postal carriers and travellers. DESSERTS!!!!!!!

osteria crotto linet: true local specialities

osteria crotto linet: true local specialities, Chiasso

call_me_rhia Says:  Ths is one of those places that are about to become obsolete... an old "grotto" (tavern in english) with homemade traditional food, out in the middle of nowhere - which makes it pleasantly tourist-free. Granted this - they could have placed it in the middle of chiasso since...

Nightlife

matrix: dubious reputation dancing

matrix: dubious reputation dancing, Chiasso

call_me_rhia Says:  It's a dive.. it's a real dive.. It changes name every year or two... it always tries to become a respectable disco... and it always fails. The crowd is very eclectic: youngsters who go there for dancing, prostitutes that go there looking for business, desperate men who go...

murrayfield pub: healthy pints and loud music

murrayfield pub: healthy pints and loud music, Chiasso

call_me_rhia Says:  Murrayfield pub... when you're young and alternative it's the place to go... a real institution: loud alternative music (often live) and cool people. As you get older the crowd looses its appeal - so what drives u there is one of the best guinness pints in the area and the...

Few pubs

Few pubs, Chiasso

d_d Says:  In Chiasso there are really few pubs opened by night. By the way there are many bars opened only during the day.In this pic one of the few Chiasso pubs, The Andy Pub located in Via Bossi.

erbe di campo, white spells, budda, sticky fingers: marijuana shops, Chiasso

call_me_rhia Says:  The shops' names are just 4 examples of marijuana shops' names... but there are several others in this little town: upon last count there were 25 - but new ones open every day - and old ones get closed every day by the police.Surprised to see marijuana shops in switzerland?...

MANOR

MANOR, Chiasso

d_d Says:  When I was a child, for Como people MANOR store was a must! Now, it's not so convenient, but you can still find nice things.I like, for example, Swiss school diaries: they are very simple and existentialist.

Local Customs

nebbiopoli

nebbiopoli, Chiasso

call_me_rhia Says:  Nothing stirs in chiasso for nmost of the year... it's really as dull as a place can get... and then, for abot 4 glorious days, the town comes alive for Carnival - the local version is called "nebbiopoli" (fog-land). If you don't believe me, ask Piccolina on VT. These 4...

The library

The library, Chiasso

d_d Says:  Quite closed to the main square, there's the city library. The library is small and not very frequented, but nice.

Mövenpick

Mövenpick, Chiasso

d_d Says:  In Chiasso main square, there's (as in every city or town in Switzerland) Mövenpick. Here you can drink or eat something or taste the famous mövenpick icecreams.Quite expensive (almost for italians), but very typical!

CASH or CARDS?

When you fuel your car, pay attention: in many station you can pay only cash or with Swiss card (i.e. Swiss American express, Swiss Visa etc).
So during the night, filling car should become a nightmare!

Favorites

BAR's blackboard posters

BAR's blackboard posters, Chiasso

d_d Says:  It's a classical in switzerland (almost in 'Ticino' canton) finding bars with blackboard posters. In Chiasso the more frequent notices refer to the 'historiacal' products for Italians or transit persons: choccolate, cigarettes, coffeee and spicy soup dices.

Look the building walls

Look the building walls, Chiasso

d_d Says:  It's probably a Swiss trend, but in Chiasso there are many walls decorations: murales, mosaics... and whatever you can imagine on a wall! Remember: look the walls!

BANKS

BANKS, Chiasso

d_d Says:  In Chiasso, as in every Swiss city, there are many banks...hundreds of banks! You won't have any problem to find a bancomat to withdraw some cash.

Clocks

Clocks, Chiasso

d_d Says:  Switzerland is famous also for clocks and watches. Some year ago, in Chiasso there were hundreds of watches shops, very cheap respect to italian ones. Today many of them have been closed, but there are still many, but not so cheap.
