Walking is the best way to explore new places in my opinion. This is also very recommendable for Locarno especial. Locarno is one of place with the most sunny days per year in whole Switzerland.

Walking are recognized as popular touristic activity here and you can find many online sources about walking Itineraries, trekking and thematic paths.

The nicest path I walked is promenade along lake shore.

    Visit Ascona

by Odiseya Written Mar 9, 2014
    Ascona

Ascona is nice summer resort very close to Locarno. In fact, this is a municipality in the district of Locarno. Both towns are very small and even their touristic offices is merged. It is small town on less then 5 km2.

Nice walk by shore of Lago Maggiore, swimming or lake cruise is some of fun things you could do here. But this beautiful cost town is more then summer adventures. It is a permanent inspiration.
Many famous artist take a vacation here in some of artistic colony. Ascona have a special atmosphere of relaxation and liberty that attract also and many anarchist and many other famous people very long time.
That was base for creation of many cultural events all year long and trough decades.
Monte Verità (literally Hill of Truth) is a hill (350 m high) in Ascona which has served as the site of many different Utopian and cultural events and communities.
I saw and Teatro del Gatto building. It looks like a castle but I didn't have a time to see some of their shows.

I travel by bus there from Locarno but there is also and option about walking there about 4 km or to take a cycling. It worth of every effort.

Lake - Lago Maggiore is one of main attraction of Locarno. Spending some time here is such a treat. The promenade along the shore is fantastic. Under shade of sycamore trees there is many benches where you can relaxed during the hot summer days.

I didn't see any swimmers but any people take a boats.

  • Hiking in Val Verzasca

Val Verzasca is just a few kilometers away from Locarno, it offers some of the wildest hiking in Switzerland because of very reduced infrastructure. The most famous hike, a 6-day Via Alta, is especially recommended but if you only have a day, or even half a day you can still find an exciting hike, either along the valley, or by climbing up to the peaks.

Some of the best hikes take you from Verzasca to the neighboring valleys (Maggia, Leventina) through breathtaking passes. Generally the nicer hikes start in the higher section, in and after Lavertezzo.

You'll find a detailed list of over 20 hikes with description, times, photos etc. at verzasca.net - Hiking in Val Verzasca

The sanctuary is named after the Virgin Mary, which is said to have appeared at this very same spot in a vision of the Monk Bartolomeo d'Ivrea in 1480, is overlooking the charming town of Locarno. The sanctuary regroups a small museum, a church and a lot of statues on its way. In addition it has many nice paintings such as the Virgin Mary or the boat escape of the Egyptians all dating from the 15th century. The sanctuary itself is a 20 minute walk from Locarno's town center through a pathway called the Via Crucis or is reached within a few minutes using the funicular.
