View from one of the restaurant's balcony by musti72 Gandria is about 10 km east of Lugano, and accessible by car, by foot through the marvellous Sentiero degli ulivi footpath or by the public boat from the center of Lugano. This old fisherman's village with its narrow walkways is built from the lakeside up the steep hill. It's really nice to have a lunch or a drink on one of the restaurants with a balcony and to enjoy the surrounding scenery. Leave a Comment

View of the San Salvatore from the footpath by musti72 The Sentiero di Gandria (or Sentiero degli ulivi) footpath starts in Castagnola (Bus Nr. 1) and ends after 30-45 minutes in Gandria, on the border to Italy. The walk is entirely on the lakefront and goes through the gorgeous Parco degli ulivi, a mediterranean park with olive trees, cypress, laurels, oleander and rosemarine. The ending point is the picturesque village of Gandria, built from the lake up the steep hill. From here you can walk back the same path or take the boat back to Lugano and have another perspective of the area. Leave a Comment

Bellinzona is not off the beaten path, but it makes a nice daytrip from Lugano, and it is easy to reach with train in 30 minutes. Since 2000 the three castles, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbarco, have been an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bellinzona has a beautiful location. It is situated by Ticino River in Ticino Valley and has a strategic position along the route over the Alpine passes. A fortress was built already in Roman times, it was later added to by the Bishop of Como. When Bellinzona was under the control of the Dukes of Milan two more castles were built and they had, not only a good defence, but also control over the passing traffic and trade. Below Castelgrande is the Old Town of Bellinzona with narrow cobbled streets, some squares and fine buildings, like the Town Hall with a courtyard with Renaissance arcades around. I visited Bellinzona on a sunny day in February and I enjoyed my stay very much. I walked around in the Old Town, ate at a café and visited all three castles by foot. Leave a Comment

by egonwegh Being a librarian myself, I could not resist visiting the Library of the Canton Ticino (Biblioteca Cantonale). I cannot remember what the library looked like from the inside, though I can imagine that, at the time (1989), they had a card catalogue in small old-fashioned wooden drawers. Anyway, this is what the outside looked like. Leave a Comment

by worldtrekker Hike a part of the Ticino Sun Trail from Monte San Salvatore to Morcote via the mountain villages of Ciona and Carona. Note: I believe the Ticino Sun Trail is a 6 or 7 day hike and this is just one of those days. The hike also begins at the base of Monte San Salvatore but you can cheat as I did, and take the funicular up. In the summer, it can be hot here (We had it hot!), so it would be best to bring a hat and sunscreen. Water would be good too, although you can buy drinks along the way on Monte San Salvatore, Ciona (I think), Carona, and Morcote. www.lugano-tourism.com/new/Parchi/walk/default.htm has a map of this hike. This link doesn't take you directly to the map. Also click on Carona: a village of the past and that will take you to the map. I really don't remember how long it took to hike from Monte San Salvatore to Morcote, but I would guess 3 - 4 hours. Leave a Comment

A breath taking view of the whole Lugano lake, city, neighbor and mountains. Don't miss the chance to go on top of the Monte San Salvatore by taking the Funicolar. The funicular is only fivehundred meters from the highway (E-35/A2) exit Lugano-Sud, and five minutes on foot from the railway station of Paradiso.

Take the road direction Rivera and when you reach the highway entrance, there you are. In the middle of a big field you will see a cable car station that will bring you right on top of Monte Tamaro. The church Santa Maria degli Angeli designed by the world famous architect Mario Botta, a wonder of contemporary architecture, with the paintings of Enzo Cucchi. The church is dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli, builded during 1992 and 1994 presents an innovative feature in the sphere of planning a religious building. Realized in porphyry, she is located on a slope on which end opens a straordinary panoramic view.

the lake promenade between melide and bissone by call_me_rhia it's a relaxed day trip from Lugano. First you need to catch a train to Melide, about 8 minutes away. Here, if you have children, you can visit the Swissminiatur - it's a park with all the most important swiss buildings and mountains in diminuitive size. Then there's a lovely promenade along the lake, hich will take you to the next village: Bissone, which is an old fishing village. There are lots of olf buildings and tiny narrow lanes and arches - and a small baroque church. There are also several restaurant to have lunch. In the afternoon you can take a boat back to Lugano and enjoy more lake scenery. Leave a Comment

view over lugano by call_me_rhia it's not off-the-beaten-path strictly speaking, but it's just off lugano, so i guess it fits the cathegory. From Lugano-Paradiso there's a funicular that rides up to the top of the mountain: if the day's clear you can have wonderful unforgettable views over lugano and the lake lugano area. You can also see the alps in the distance. Note that the trip there and back costs (year 20029 27 swiss francs. There's a restaurant on top, and some easy and short nature trails Leave a Comment

Take a boat or bus to the tiny, traffic-free village of Gandria. In the main tourist season it is apparently swarming with visitors but when I went in March, I virtually had the place to myself. The tiny streets are lined with pastel-coloured houses and around every corner are wonderful vistas of the lake and the mountains beyond. Stop for lunch at Ristorante Locanda Gandriese. If the weather allows, choose a table on the terrace, with a perfect setting almost hanging over the lake. Otherwise there are tables inside from where you can still see the lake through the large windows. After lunch, walk back along the lakeside path that goes all the way back to Lugano. It's very peaceful, easy walking and the views on the way are stunning. You can reach Gandria by boat or bus from opposite the Lugano Tourist Office. Leave a Comment
