San Salvatore
  • Tip Rating:
  • The funicular station is only 5 minutes walk from the Lugano-Paradiso train station. The funicular and restaurant on the San Salvatore mountain run from approx. mid March to beginning of November. Check the link for the current situation. When you press the funicular button then the info comes in English too, same with prices. From the mountain you will have a good view on Lugano, the Savoy alps and the Italian Lombard region. There is a round walking path and several hiking trails start here too.

    Piazza Riforma
  • Tip Rating:
  • This main square is the heart of Lugano. The town hall (photo 1) was built in 1844 in neo-classical style. Get a mediterranean feeling by sitting in one of the restaurants on the piazza sipping a coffee. Twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday mornings there is a fresh produce market on the traffic free square.

    Post office
  • Tip Rating:
  • The central post office is a prominent landmark. Please note, that the ATM is right around the building past the kiosk. If you stand in front of the main entrance (facing the entrance) turn right then twice left. It gives Euros and Swiss francs.

    Monte Bre

  • This little "red arrow" train takes you on a round trip from Piazza Manzoni for about 40 minutes, approx. 10 km. It costs Fr. 8.00 for adults. You can get off in certain places and get back on later in the day if for instance you want to go up Monte Bre.

You can find the timetable for 2007 on the Lugano website. But generally it runs from about March to October depending on the weather.

  • The San Rocco church was built in the 17th century on top of the already existing church from 1349. The wall frescos show the holy San Rocco of Montpellier who protects the people suffering from the Plague. For several years from 1985 the church which has the biggest religious significance for the Lugano people has been renovated.

  • This church features the most famous renaissance wall painting in Switzerland. The church originally belonged to a monastery. The church itself was built from 1499 and was inaugurated in 1515.
