Rent a boat at Lake Lugano

    by nytraveler21 Written Dec 16, 2006

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Prices were surprisingly cheap to rent a boat in Switzerland which is notorious for being expensive. I think the price was roughly 50 francs an hour with a slight deal for three hours. We chose three hours. The boats had some speed to them, and you can take Lake Lugano into Italy. We were told to stop at customs but we eventually reached the other end of the lake so we knew we were in Italy. So much for the customs. Fun to ride the coasts on this clean lake. Id recommend getting a boat for a day, bringing lunch, and having a swim.

Take the cogway to the top of Monte Generoso

    by nytraveler21 Written Dec 16, 2006

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You take a cogway on a scary ear popping ride to the top. It is completely safe but you cant help but be worried. Once on top you feel like your in another world. There is restaurant with plenty of windows to take in the view at the top of the mountain, as well as an old swiss style house with sheep and all.

The central post office is a prominent landmark. Please note, that the ATM is right around the building past the kiosk. If you stand in front of the main entrance (facing the entrance) turn right then twice left. It gives Euros and Swiss francs.

    San Salvatore

by yumyum Written Nov 30, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The funicular station is only 5 minutes walk from the Lugano-Paradiso train station. The funicular and restaurant on the San Salvatore mountain run from approx. mid March to beginning of November. Check the link for the current situation. When you press the funicular button then the info comes in English too, same with prices. From the mountain you will have a good view on Lugano, the Savoy alps and the Italian Lombard region. There is a round walking path and several hiking trails start here too.

    Independence square

Here you find the independence monument. In 1798 the canton Ticino became independent from Swiss dominions and joined the Swiss confederation. On the sides of the monument of you can see scenes from the independence fights. Also on this square you find a modern sculpure of a giant head.
