It claims to be one of the sunniest places in Switzerland with view over Lugano and to the alps. There are various walks and hikes up there. You can take TPL bus No. 1 to Cassarate-Monte Bre stop and then the funicular.
Go to the top of Monte Bre!
Take a trip with the funicular from Cassarate (10 minute walk east from the center or bus nr. 1) to the top of the Monte Bre, 660 meters above the city. There you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views one can have around Lugano!
From the summit café you see the lake, the Lugano Bay, the San Salvatore and the Monte Rosa massif.

Mount Bre - best views of Lugano
You can catch the train up the mountain or for the more agile, you can take a fairly easy walk to the top or, half way at least no?! Either way, you will be rewarded with some seriously breath-taking views of the entire city of Lugano. This place and view would have to be in my top 3 most beautiful places I've seen in the world.
I went in Summer and took a picnic up the mountain with a friend. I couldn't stop looking at the view, even to talk to my friend (OK, well most of the time) and we watched the light change as the sun went down and the city and lake became a sea of lights.

Fantastic views of Lugano
Monte Bré provides fantastic views over Lugano and the easiest way to reach the top is by funicular. Bear in mind though that this is Switzerland and the price is steep as well. We paid 23 CHF for a return ticket (approx £15 / €19 - Sept 2012).
To get there from Lugano city centre you can take bus no.1 to bus stop Cassarate/ Monte Bré or from the railway station you can take bus no.2 to bus stop Lanchetta.
Another alternative is to take the Lugano City Tour land train which includes the Monte Bré funicular as a stop.
There are 2 parts to the journey. The first one is just a short ride up to Suvigliana where you need to get off and change carriages for the second part - and this is where you have to pay! You may have to wait a while as well for the carriages to arrive, but when they do the journey only takes around 10-13 minutes depending on the situation.
At the top the world's your oyster especially if you like hiking or mountain biking, but if you're like me and just want to drink in the views you should head down to the hotel which has a panoramic view from its terrace. Just turn right when you get off the funicular and a track takes you down there. It's no distance and easily found.
When we were there people just wandered down to take in the views and nobody seemed to mind but we sat there for a while with a drink and soaked up the views in a more relaxing way. The drinks weren't overly expensive for the location, depending on what you have of course.
All in all it's really a trip that you should do when you come to Lugano, regardless of the cost because it's worth every centime, especially if the weather's kind - and that of course is something you need to bear in mind
Hike on Monte Bre
Monte Bre is the taller of the two mountains flanking Lugano. The easiest way to get up is to take the funicular up to the top (14 SFr, 22 SFr round-trip). There is a cafe/restaurant at the funicular that gives really nice views of the surrounding valley. From there, you can follow trails that can take you down the mountain or even farther up to higher peaks.
We decided to follow the trail to the village of Bre and then hike down to Gandria. The walk to Bre takes about 20 minutes and the path is quite easy to walk. Hiking down to Gandria is a bit more of a challenge. The path is steep and rocky, and the descent takes about 1.5-2 hours. But the views of Lake Lugano and the city are breathtaking!
- Hiking and Walking
Take the funicular to the summit of Monte Brè (933m) for wonderful views of the Lake Lugano region and Valais Alps beyond.
It was misty on the day I visited and, from comments from others on the net, it seems it often is. However, even if conditions are not the best, the views are lovely and the atmosphere of the place is very restful.
There are restaurants at the top so stop awhile, enjoy a drink and just soak up the surroundings. Then go for a walk around the well-marked paths to appreciate the views from every aspect.

Mont San Salvatore and Mont Bre
Lugano is surrounded by mountains. The most importants are Monte San Salvatore and Monte Bre. You can get the tops of both by funicular and enjoy great views from there.-
