OLTINGEN: Silk Ribbon Loom in the Museum

by Kathrin_E

The villages of the Oberbaselbiet have always been rather poor. Farmers could survive only if they did an additional job: They took to the weaving of silk ribbons, which were then sold in Basel. Originally operating the mechanical looms was the men's work because it was even harder than working in the fields which was left to the women. With the introduction of electricity in the early 20th century weaving became less strenuous, so men and women traded tasks. One of the last fully functional looms - if I understood correctly, the very last - is put up inside Oltingen's little Heimatmuseum. The museum, open every first Sunday of the month or by appointment, is situated in the basement of the old barn next to parsonage and church. A group of volunteers has learned the almost forgotten handicraft and keeps the loom in operation. A loom this size can weave up to 20 ribbons contemporaneously...

OLTINGEN: Frescoes Inside the Church

by Kathrin_E

The 15th century frescoes inside the church show the Apostles and the childhood of the Virgin Mary in the choir, the story of St. Nicolaus, the patron, on the Southern wall and the Last Judgment in the West. The Northern wall is missing due to the addition of the side aisle in the 19th century; the common programme for that side would have been the Passion of Christ.

OLTINGEN: Church and Churchyard

by Kathrin_E

The parish church of Oltingen, Wenslingen and Anwil is situated on top of a hill above the village of Oltingen. Church, parsonage, barn and former ossuary form an ensemble. A wall surrounds the churchyard which serves as cemetery. The first church was built up here in the 9th century. The present building was erected in the 14th and enlarged in the 15th century. The side aisle was added in 1851/52.The church is famous for its medieval frescoes (see separate tip). Their preservation may be considered a miracle because the parish introduced the reformation and became protestant in 1529. The calvinist faith totally disapproves of religious images. Luckily the frescoes weren't destroyed but merely covered with plaster and paint. 50 years ago they were rediscovered and restored.

Hidden Treasures in the countryside

by tulipsinthesnow

If you're like me and like to wander a lot, you're sure to reap the benefits in Basel-Landschaft. This is La Maison De Bâle (or was it Le Manoir De Bâle), a farm estate owned by the family of the same name. It's not too far from Alchwil, which is where I learned the history of it from a local. It went something like this: it is the oldest house in the kanton since under Swiss rule, and still belongs to the same family. Their house lands are large, but they also own a great area of the countryside and hills, and preserve it with no developing. In the 17th century a German count coveted their property, and plotted to burn it down (there was a manipulating plot that went along with it, but I forget the detailing) so the mansion is now stoned instead of wood. He said the family is of the sophisticated side, but did choose not to have electricity until the 1950's!He said the family is really...
