I know that Switzerland is infamous for being expensive (hm, I do only partly agree). For those of us who need to check their emails and send e-greetings to the world out there (especially to VT!) - here is a tip:

Go to the Central Post Office in the old town (Freie Strasse, see also Off The Beaten Path Tip) where really cheap Internet access is available.

I could not believe it at first. You have to insert a 1-Sfr-coin and then you can surf and surf and surf ... For some special websites (safe connections e.g.) you are charged (a low rate), but VT e.g. was free. I almost spent a half hour there and could probably have spent an hour or more for this 1 SFr.

  • Drinking water fountain at Schaffhauser Rheinweg - Basel
    Drinking water fountain

    by german_eagle
A very nice thing in Basel is that there are lots of such fountains providing drinking water.

Save your money and drink this free water instead of buying expensive mineral water at the groceries! And there is no need carrying around bottles with mineral water!

It was sunny, I had just finished a tiring (but enjoyable) visit of the former Carthusian monastery and got thirsty. I walked along Schaffhauser Rheinweg and stumbled every 200 m across such little fountains ... wondering if I could drink this water I asked a local and he said yes, you can!

I hesitated first, but finally I drank (and I survived!). Later I reassured with my friend Phil, a local, and he told me that these fountains indeed provide tap water, and it is drinking water!

  • For all those who are interested in culture, museums, art collections the regional museums pass (Oberrheinischer Museumspass) is a great deal.

The Museums Pass covers more than 150 museums in the region, including Germany, France and Switzerland and such famous museums like the Art Museum in Basel and the Unterlinden museum in Colmar.

I purchased the short-time version, valid four days within one month. It costs 25 Euro.

The Basel card is a way to save money, if you want to see something of Basel and its surroundings, as well as some of the attractions.
More than 80 attractions for free or with a reduction.

    There are these:
    • Free entrance to 25 museums (regular exhibitions)
    • Reductions on special exhibitions
    • Free entrance to the Basel Zoo (that alone would be about 12 SFr per adult)
    • 30% reduction on car rental (not so necessary in Basel, we have a very good public transport)
    • Free city sightseeing tours
    • Free ferry boat rides (a definite must!)
    • Reductions on theatre tickets
    • Free entrance to the garden swimming pools (St. Jakob, Eglisee, Bachgraben ...)
    • Reductions at concerts and discotheques
    • Reductions at 26 of Basel restaurants
    • Discounts at various shops in Basel
    • Reductions on boat trips and taxi fares
    • Reduction on wellness offers

(Note thatt they don't include the public transport here, but there is an offer including it, or you can buy day cards)

    Price for adults (Status Sep 2006): 24 hrs: 20 swiss francs, 48hrs: 27 .-, 72 hrs: 35.-
    Price for children: 24 hrs: 10.-, 48hrs: 13.50.-, 72 hrs: 17.50.-

There are about 30 museums in Basel, so even if the weather is bad, you will have lots of interesting museums and galleries to look at! Other than that there is a zoo, wonderful architecture, the Rhine river to take a walk at and, and, and...........

Whenever I am in Basel I love to take some time to go to the banks of the Rhine river and sit down on the steps. I am usually in best company, because everybody seems to enjoy it just as I do!

There is very little grafitti anywhere in Switzerland. It is generally a very clean and beautiful country. However you can come across some interesting and amusing drawings on buildings occasionally. Here is one that almost looks life like as Jim stands to have a conversation with the drawing.

I am not sure who Peter Mollet Geb is or was. However I did come across this interesting monument to his. It had inscribed on the it Peter Mollet Geb 1921 from Dr. Rudolf Riggenbach. I always love unique statues and monuments and was glad to find this one.

Wander through the beautiful old town, accros Mittlerbruke and along the river bank, taking a break to enjoy the sunshine. If your energetic, or on wheels, continue down the river to the Wiessen and along towards Lorrach.
