View from Bar Rouge by Myndo Bar Rouge is located in the Messeturm, and is a Bar and Disco. The Messeturm (Mass Tower) is with 107m the highest Building in Switzerland and one of the new "highlights" of Basels Skyline (so the builders say). I think its more a klutz. In the Tower on the 31st and 30 floor there is the "Bar Rouge". During the week the entrance is free. On weekends they do have special attractions like "Latin Night" or so, and then it costs. What is special here are the toilets. Entering your toilet cabin you have a wonderful view right over the city, since the windows go from the ceiling to the floor. Nothing for people who are afraid of heights. (and if you know where to look, you could be able to see some small people sittiing on the toilet, since the windows are not mirrored - but it is quite high up. so you will not really see much).
Dress Code Depends on the event. Opening times: Monday to Wednesday 5 p.m. - 1 a.m. Thursday 5 p.m. - 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. - 4 a.m. Sunday 8 p.m. - 1 a.m. (Thanks to my friend Tea for the picture, he made it with a handy so never mind the quality) Leave a Comment

Joggeli swimming pools by Myndo Only available in the summertime (that means between the end of Juni to the end of July). It´s hot and you want to do something special in Basel? Try this. During the day you can go swimming and bathing in the pools of the Joggeli (St. Jakob). In the evening they prepare a screen, so you can watch a film under the stars and at the pool... Very nice ambiente. They offer a new film every evening. For the program, have a look at the website I indicated. This is one of the two open air cinemas Basel features during summertime (the other is at the Munster)

Muenster open air, view from muenster tower by Myndo As several other cities in Switzerland, also Basel features in late summer an Open Air Cinema. It is nicely located in the middle of the city on the Munsterplatz. In the evening they will errect the big screen so you can view the films here. The dates and films you can find on the website below. Mostly they have newer films. On one evening they have a surprise night - which can be good, very good or just bad (yes, we also had that). Of course the whole experience is very weather dependent. They will show the film in almost every weather (maybe except for wind) ... but really, have you ever seen MIB in streaming rain? (the film was too good to walk away...and a real experience, too - lol) Tickets: www.helloyellow.ch or directly on the spot.
depends on the weather (see above :-) casual. Leave a Comment

Cafes Des Arts. If you want a quiet drink on a week night this is a great place to go. It's a really nice piano bar, there is usually a bloke playing the piano and singing. However, at weekends it is packed to the rafters and so busy it's not fun. Beware of the revolving doors!! There is a fair amount of art on the walls (unsurprisingly!!) including some by ex-Basel resident Jean Tinguely.
Smart casual, though I usually feel underdressed in jeans at the weekends. Leave a Comment Theme: Live MusicDirections: Barfusserplatz, in the corner next to Cafe Hugenin.

If you do want to brave a Swiss club this is the best for people with general taste that we have found. If your into 'proper' clubbing, dance music etc go to Zurich!

To be honest the nightlife in Basel leaves much to be desired. There are several clubs, most of which are quite small and either have dire music or are filled with lots of sleazy blokes (see warnings and dangers slot). After eight months of trying we have given up and now usually retire to this favourite expat watering hole on Steinenvorstadt. The beer is expensive, but on quite nights you get to listen to English radio (Virgin), the staff are very friendly as are most of the regulars. Every other Friday there is now Karaoke, and there are frequently other special nights. For all the sports fans, if they arn't showing whatever match you want to watch on the big screen try asking, they usually oblige. And the atmosphere for the big matches is fantastic, role on the world cup!!!

In the summer numerous cafes and bars spill out onto the streets. They are perfect for enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, a leisurly drink and watching the world go by. Leave a Comment Theme: People Watching

by Toby_Swiss On this picture you see the main night-life street from Basel - the Steinenvorstadt (called 'Steinen'). Since the whole city center is actually quite small, all the good (or let's better say the popular) places to go out are situated close to each other. So a typical pub-tour or something like that is always nice and easy. There are plenty of 'Bierstuben' in the backstreets of Klein-Basel to start an evening. Situated on the right bank of the river, in Rheingasse, there's the famous 'Fischerstube' and 'Linde' which has the best beer in town, the Ueli-Beer. It's even popular all over Switzerland. Try it, you'll definitely like it! Later in the evening have a look at Atlantis, an old dancing place where already my grandmother has been. It's still one of the most popular places to go out, even if it's obviously a place to be seen... And if you like it a bit rougher, try the Irish Pub Paddy Reilly's or the Mr. Pickwick Pub - places always full of people from all over the world. The club 'Route 66' might be a funny place to end up the night - it's the place where most people go after 3am. Bars like 'Des Arts', 'Campari Bar' or the always crowded Papa Joe's are always nice to hang around. They seem a bit posh on the first sight, but actually they are not. Just some nice calm places to date someone or also to start a long evening. Between Barfüsserplatz and Marktplatz there's a place called Mitte with its smoking and non-smoking bars 'fumare non fumare'. Personally I really like this place as there are always many different kinds of happenigs like tango-evening, classical concerts, speaches, discos, etc. You'll find people from all ages there; artists, students, bankers, a cultural mix which shows good the real Basel atmosphere. What else? Clubs like nt/Areal or 'Nordstern' in the industrial Northern part of Basel are nice as well. Good music, not main-stream and nice people... :) At www.basel.to you'll find a good overview about Basel's nightlife. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
