    Tramway: Tramway

by bonio Written Jul 14, 2012

Strange how a place appeals without any knowledge of it. First saw this place passing on a tram and don't know why it looked good, maybe a collection of outdoor seating, the location next to the tram track or just the appearance.
Anyway, visited twice, both times good food with veggie options for Mrs B and no nonsense service, just the sort of place we love on our travels - excellent!

café alpin: Perfect combination of shopping and coffeehouse

by robertbaum Updated Apr 4, 2011

The Café Alpin is a really multitalented shop. At ground / first floor it is a fashion store for good quality Swiss fashion. On the terrace and in the basement it is a coffee-bar with a huge selection of coffees and wines. For what reason you are visiting it, this will be your choice, but it is an ideal combination. But the owner Stephan Minder has more ideas in his mind like music events he wants to host here.

    alpin opening hours:
    Monday 14:00 - 18:30
    Tuesday - Friday 10:00 - 18:30

    café alpin serving hours:

Restaurant zum Aeusseren Stand: Better then the others:-)

    by nessie-ch Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant is perfect for a fine meal. Noon, you'll see business people or politicians eating there. So, it's clear it's nothing with children or noisy people... but if you are in a mood and want to have a nice meal with bread and butter, served very friendly, at noon with reasonable prices...it's really great.

Favorite Dish: They change the menues every day. It's possible to command only the half, so if you don't want eat very much, it is possible:-)

Migros Restaurant: a good & cheap self-service restaurant

by globetrott Updated Jan 12, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In the Migros-restaurants in Switzerland you can always save some money , because they have great food there for a reasonable price and in most cases you will also see what you get, even when you dont know the right expressions from the menu.

Favorite Dish: Migros-restaurants will have a buffet of cold and warm dishes, where you can compose your menu on your own, choose between different kinds of meat and fishes, vegetables, potatoes etc. and at the end you pay a certain amount, in 2010 it was 2,90 sfr per 100gramm.

Migros Take Away: Gourmet food :O)

    by jorgec25 Written Mar 9, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Migros Take Away is a great choice if you don't want to spend much money on food, and still want to try some local ingredients or recipes.

Also the Migros Supermarket provided some already cooked food at very good prices, considering that Switzerland is not exactly cheap.

There is always a Migros in some part of the city. It's easy to find and reliable.

And they sell good coffee too.

    DaBucola: Yes! Pizza in Switzerland

by RioRosie Written Jul 30, 2007

Small restaurant on a side street in Bern's busy downtown, it looked liked a place that catered to the local professionals on their lunch breaks.
It was the delicious smell that drew me inside on Friday, July 13.
I confess: I first tasted "European pizza" three years ago in Vienna and I've never forgotten it. I wanted to try it again. This pizza margareta was superb. Perfectly seasoned tomato sauce and the just the right amount of cheese.
I still have trouble eating pizza with a knife and fork, but when in Bern...
The size would've been better for two people, but I was hungry and it was so good! So, I ate about 2/3 of it, and wished I could've taken a "doggy bag."

    Camargue Mistral-Keller: Great Swiss Wine

by scanos Written Apr 17, 2006

Very affordable and atmospheric restaurant in Bern Old Town which is generically Swiss. The waiters are very friendly and responsive. The beer (Cardinal - a local swiss brew ) - is excellent and you'll have the chance to sample some excellent Swiss Red Wine - Sang Des Martyrs (from F&D Giroud Sion -Valais).

Favorite Dish: The Sausage and Ham dish (Tageshit 3) is very tasty. The wine is priced per 100ml and ironically the non Swiss house wine is 4 CHF compared to 6 for Sang Des Martyrs. Total bill in Apr 06
    Large beer - 5.80
    200 mls Sang Des Martyrs - 12.00
    200 mls Sang Des Martyrs - 12.00
    Margarhita Pizza - 16.80
    Sausage and Ham - 19.50

    Total 66.80 CHF (29.40 pds sterling,42 euro)

    Restaurant Moleson: Restaurant Moleson

    by nessie-ch Updated Sep 4, 2005

    0.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fresh ingredients. Nice place situated not far away from the station. There are two parts. One is more bistro and the other part is for a really fine meal with several courses.

I have to say as well, that this restaurant is nothing!! if you want to eat just a salad... It' s NOT possible just to command two starters...
so if you want to eat just a snack... don't go there!!

Favorite Dish: I love the salad, but there are all kind of fine menues, Swiss and French specialities

Schwellenmätteli: Listen to the sound of the river...

    by nessie-ch Updated Sep 4, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It opened in summer 2004... I just love the architecture. You look at it and might think it's a riverboat... don't miss go down there, it's worth... to have a drink in a special atmosphere...
Until now, I could not make a test of the food myself... It seems as if whole Berne is making reservations, so it's a must to reserve a table...it's quite expensive,
but even if the food would not be terrible.. the place IS!!!

Favorite Dish: wait.. I'll write it, when I know better, but the waiters are especially kind!

    Greek cuisine... delicious!

    by nessie-ch Updated Sep 4, 2005

    0.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It once was a great restaurant... but in the end of august 2005 there was too much rain, so the water in the river Aare went in all the houses in this location. So the restaurant has to be renovated. On the website they say, that it will reopen in the beginning of 2006..

Favorite Dish: Greek specialities... tzatziki, souvlaki and all well known of the Greek kitchen. I love it...

  • Dählhölzli Restaurant: Family paradise next to the Aare river

by ferieninkorea Updated Jul 24, 2005

Are you looking for a cheap restaurant, where you even can unpack your own sandwitch and snacks, where your kids will beg you to stay longer? That's the Dählhölzli Restaurant. It is located on the Aare river, in the middle of the Dählhölzli Park and a few meters down from the main entrance to the Dählhölzli zoo.

The restaurant is very family friendly, has a huge terrasse. One thing to look out: if you are sitting in the area with blue chairs, there's a service and you shouldn't unpack your own stuff. But on the red chairs, just feel at home. You can go to the self-service buffet and buy something, or just unpack your own food while your kids are playing on the installations specially made for them. One negative point: outdoor furniture is quite old and shabby.

Favorite Dish: In the self service area, you'll find things like bratwurst and french fries, as well as a salad buffet. Prices are around 10 francs. In the area with waiters, you'll pay for the same bratwurst and french fries 5 francs more, but you'll have a bigger menu choice. Prices are average, between 20 and 30 francs.

Old furniture but nice view on the Aare river

  • Bären, Ostermundigen: Countryside restaurant in town

by ferieninkorea Updated Jul 23, 2005

They tout themselves to be "The countryside restaurant nearest to the Federal Palace". While they are not actually in the town of Bern, it's just a short 15 minutes bus ride from the center (Bus number 10) or if you happen to be at the Bern station, it's faster if you take the S-Bahn Bound for Langnau or Thun via Wankdorf. Ostermundigen is the second stop. Getting there by public transportation is best, since you will be able to enjoy one of their delicous wines without being anxious about the traffic controls. Remember: don't drink and drive...

They have a wintergarden, a typical Swiss corner as well as an Italian grotto in the basement. Each part of the restaurant has its own style and menu.
