Bern Transportation

Airport: The Airport is called Bern-Belp. Its only a small airport. International Flights go to Vienna, Berlin (Intersky), Paris (Swiss), Munich (Lufthansa) and Rome (Air Alps). Other places can be reached via Basle (Swiss) or Munich (Lufthansa). As the runway is only short, only small planes can land in Bern-Belp.

From the Airport there is a bus to the train station of Belp where you can catch the train to Bern. (Bus runs after most flights, the train every half hour. There is another Bus which brings you directly to town but it is more expensive.

Domestic flights to Bern, Lugano and Geneva are available. There are also a Train from/to Zurich with Swissair Flight Numbers.

International Flights are available with KLM Alps (former Air Engadina to many destinations as: Amsterdam, Munich, Brussel and others.

By air you fly to Zurich and then take the train to Bern. There is a direct train to Bern. 1h 15min. Pretty expenxive but comfortable and fast. The same from Geneva or Basle. Bern is almost in the middle of Switzerland.
In Bern you can take the bus or the street train. Is kina like the cable car in san fran but of course not so beautiful and interesting but the target is the same...

There are also bikes at the train station which can be taken for free. Ask the tourist info.

When you come from further the easiest way to get to Bern is to take the plane to Zurich or Geneve and there you can take the train to Bern. When you come from not so far you can also choose for the train. From Brussels you can take the Thalys to Paris and than in Gare du Nord the TGV to Bern. When you come from Germany you can take the ICE (Intercity express).

Catch the train from either Basel Zurich Geneva or Milan.
Buy a travellers railcard or a one day ticket and use the trains! In the cities use the public transport, buses trains trams and when at a lakeside look out for ferries and ships. Switzerland has the higest concentration of these services in the world!

When you fly to Switzerland you will most likely fly into Zurich. Although it is possible to fly into Geneva, Zurich has the most international flights.
Bern has no metro but it has a good network of trollybusses.Frankly Bern is the kind of town that is best done by foot, inasmuch as 'oldtown' covers a very small area and it has all the sights of interest.

From May to October:
City-bikes, electric-bikes, skateboards, scooters, mini scooters and kickboards are waiting for you at Bahnhofplatz near the station of Berne.
Just leave your I.D. as well as a deposit of 20 Swiss Francs, and off you go.
Lending period 7.30a.m - 9.30 p.m. (bikes have to be returned on the same day)
