Just above the village of Grindelwald is a trerrace path passing through chalet homes and quieter surroundings than the bustling village itself. Its also a great place for views of the glaciers of Grindelwald - like here in this pic which also shows the Schreckhorn.

    Glacier Gorge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Grindelwald's glacier gorge is situated about 2km from the village centre. It takes about 35 mins to walk there or if feeling lazy you can take a local bus from Grindelwald station.

A specially constructed wooden walkway leads from the Hotel Restaurant Gletscherschlucht for about 100m through this natural wonder. Its great on a hot day as the walls rising 100m up keep this place pretty cool. There is a small entrance fee to pay but its worth it - especially if you co-incide your visit when bunjee jumps or canyon jumps are happening in here.

    Grindelwald
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although its a touristic village its a must see for its setting beneath the mighty Eiger and its two glaciers.

The train station is right in the centre with shops and hotels on either side of the platform. Its from here that you can continue the train ride up through the Eiger to the everlasting snow of the Jungfraujoch - an amazing journey not to be missed.

    Alpine flowers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take time during your walks and see those lovely flowers around the area. Know their names and have fun. Can't identify them all though :-) We prefer late Spring till late
Summer to perfectly see these nature's beauty.

The Schilthorn is definitely a must-do in Grindelwald! It offers an unmatched alpine panorama from just under 10,000 feet high. To get to the top you take a series of 4 superbe gondola rides, many times hundreds of feet above the ground. It is a THRILL! First from Stechelberg - Gimmelwald, Gimmelwald - Murren, Murren - Birg, Birg - Summit! At the summit is the worlds first revolving mountain-top restaurant, which is also the highest altitude restaurant in continental Europe! And the location of the James Bond film, In Her Majesty's Secret Service! I think it's a better, cheaper alternative to the Jungfraujoch trip, although I have not been there before. On the Jungfraujoch, you go to an altitude of 11,332 feet (3454m) on a train to the highest train station in Europe, but the Schilthorn brings you to 9,744 feet (2970m) on incredible aerial cable-cars, and gives you an impressive view of the famous Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau that I wouldn't think you would get from the Jungfraujoch. So, that's my comparison for ya.

Trummelbach Falls - Waterfalls within a mountain!

About 15 minutes drive away from Grindelwald is a place called Trummelbach. The famous attraction here is called the Trummelbachfalle - waterfalls inside caves. I wasn't sure whether I would consider this a tourist trap because it was quite touristy, but since I would recommend it to others, I think it is a must see!

The Trummelbach falls are a series of 10 waterfalls within a mountain. When we were there in spring there was a heck of a lot of water (and very powerful waterfalls) since the snow was melting. You take an "elevator" up and then walk around and down flights of stairs stopping at the different waterfalls.

Entrance fee is CHF10 per person (no credit cards accepted).

Make sure you have good non-slip shoes and a raincoat, as it is very wet in the caves.

For many people, this is a stop on the way to the Jungfraujoch. You get off one train, go by the shops and eateries, and then get on another train. I highly recommend taking some time to explore this area. Some of the regions best hiking trails begin and end here. I chose to take the trail all of the way back down to Grindelwald. In June, very few people were on the trail. The weather was nice, mountains were visible, and wildflowers were everywhere. This was a great place to walk, take photos, and eat lunch somewhere on the trail. Kleine Scheidegg itself is above the timberline, so there is an unobstructed view of the high peaks of the Eiger, Monch, and the Jungfrau. The trails will lead to forested regions, mountain meadows, and one even skirts the area just below the Eiger's north wall. This region is full of classic hikes. Signs will lead to the various paths and give the hikers an idea of how long the hike will be. Many people save the Kleine Scheidegg visit for the afternoon after returning from the Jungfraujoch. I concur that this is a good idea.

Fruity Hike - Apple Fritter Way!
  • Tip Rating:

This is a real healthy hike - combining wonderful alpine views and information about healthy fruit! The trail from Holenstein to Brandegg rambles over easy alpine pastures, flower filled meadows and shady forests whilst being faced with the mighty northface of the Eiger. During this easy 1.5 hour walk (drops gently down 500m)there are six information boards on the subject of fruit. At the end when you reach the Mountain restaurant Brandegg you can sample their speciality of warm apple fritters (bit like a donut with cooked apple inside) and fruit juice!

  • Directions: Holenstein, the stating point, is the mid cable-car station of the Grindelwald Grund - Maenlichen cable-car.

    Looking out for animals
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was a bit disappointed about not being able to go on the Mumeltierwag (the Marmot trail between First and Grosse Scheidegg) as it was still closed when we were there - still a bit of snow on the ground. You're supposed to be able to spot all sorts of wildlife.

In any case, later in the summer, they do organise guided walks starting from Grosse Scheidegg towards the Schwarzhorn. I am definitely signing up for that one the next time I'm there.

Summertime is meant for walking in the mountains. An easy thing to do is to take a gondola from Grindelwald up to Firstbahn and then explore from there. The views are remarkable on the way up. Journey takes about 20 minutes and costs about CHF30 one way per person (if you do not have the Jungfrau pass).
