First - a scenic alpine area
  • Tip Rating:
  • For a full-day-hikingtour from Interlaken, I may highly recommend "First" ! It is a mountain in the north of Grindelwald and it is a perfect place to start different alpine-hikes of all levels - easy till experienced. Bachalpsee is the first sight you will get to - within about 50 minutes, an easy and comfortable hike almost without any uphill-passages. From there you may hike to Faulhorn, BUT be prepared : the first part is really steep and exhausting but the view from Faulhorn is really spectacular and the restaurant and hotel there had been the very first alpine-hotel in Switzerland.
The hike from First to Schynigge Platte will take the whole day and needs some hiking-experience.
click here for a panorama-view from First
    An ordinary ticket Grindelwald-First-Grindelwald is 50 sfr/ 35 Euro !
Grindelwald is 15km south-east of Interlaken. First is in the north of Grindelwald and the cable-car to its peak starts in the centre of the village, next to Sunstar-Hotel.

Aareschlucht - a great excursion on a cloudy day
  • Tip Rating:
  • Aareschlucht is NOT really a Must, BUT it might be a good halfday-excursion from Interlaken on a hazy or cloudy day. Aareschlucht is a gorge, where the river Aare flows through a rather narrow valley - at first the rocks on both sides of the gorge are in a distance of about 200 meters and at the very end you may even touch the rocks on both sides at the same time. 1400 meters of artificial paths, tunnels and bridges are leading you through that gorge. In my personal opinion Aareschlucht is somehow over-rated and only recommendable, when you have not seen similar places like Truemmelbach in Lauterbrunnen first.
From Meiringen you may take the train to Aareschlucht West and walk down the gorge, or you may park your car at the Aareschlucht-Westeingang, walk up the valley - and start with the most spectacular part and end finally at the east-entrance, where you may just walk back again.
Aareschlucht is open between April 1st and November 1st
    In July&August there will be light-effects each Wed&Fri 09.00-11.00p.m.!
2/3 of the path, beginning at the West-gate - are adapted for wheelchairs
Parking for guests is free of charge at the West-gate
    There is a restaurant, a self-service and a kiosk there !
Aareschlucht is a bit outside of Meiringen, 2 km to the east. From Interlaken you need about 45 minutes by car.

Allmendhubel - smaller brother of Schilthorn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Allmendhubel might make another halfday-excursion or may a fullday in combination with Muerren or the Schilthorn ! Allmendhubel is a small mountain close to Muerren with a hight of 1912 meters above sea-level. This might be an interesting alternative to Schilthorn / Piz Gloria, in case that the higher mountain-levels are hidden in the haze on a foggy day.
The view from Allmendhubel is similar to the one from the village of Muerren, BUT you see everything from a place 300 meters higer than from Muerren.
It will always depend on the weather, that could change really fast in that area.
Allmendhubel is also included in most of the pre-paid train-tickets, while the Schilthorn has extra-high ticket-prices !!
The cablecar to Allmendhubel starts behind the small church of Muerren - you may see the station in the back on my 2nd picture !

Brienzer Rothorn - for a perfect alpine panorama
  • Tip Rating:
  • Brienzer Rothorn is a Must, when you would like to see a perfect alpine panorama at a place close to Interlaken . A romantic steamtrain will take you uphill. Planalp is the first station of the Brienzer Rothornbahn, in a height of 1341 meters above sea-level. It is there, where you will have the first possibility to take photographs of the interesting lubrications- and maintainance-works that has to be done during the train-ride of the oldfashioned cog-wheel-trains on their way to Rothorn Kulm. In Planalp the trains of both directions may pass by each other, and water will be refilled as well. You may get out for about 5-8 minutes and watch everything !
The Brienzer Rothornbahn has several passing-places, where the train stops for a few minutes in order to wait for the oncoming train, so you may leave the train in order to go hiking in that area, BUT you better inform the conductor in advance, that you plan to do so. The first train that arrives at the passing-stations will stay there waiting for the oncoming train, but the other train will just go through without stopping.
    The return-ticket to Rothorn-Kulm is about 60 sfr / 40 Euros
You may walk down from Planalp to Brienz within 1 hour and 50 minutes
The one-way-ticket to Planalp is 29 sfr / 20 Euros

    Bachalpsee - high above Grindelwald
  • Tip Rating:
  • When exploring the area around Interlaken, you really should not miss this beautiful alpine-lake with cristall-clear waters, and it is one of the highlights, when hiking from Schynigge Platte to First : Bachalpsee is one of the most beautiful mountain-lakes of the area and you will see it at many postcards and posters with the mountains reflecting in the lake like in a mirror. It is a pity that on my picture there are also a few clouds, but at least it was sunny.
From the mountain-station of the First cablecar you may hike to Bachalpsee within 45 minutes - the path is easy and rather flat, with fine gravel and no rocks - a small street, that could also be used by wheelchairs and Kinderwagen, bikes etc.
When you intend to take a picture of the reflecting mountains, you have to step down to the water-level and take the picture from there !!
Bachalpsee is in a height of 2265 meters above sea-level, 45 minutes to walk from the First-station, and high above Grindelwald

Faulhorn was the 1st alpine hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Faulhorn was the 1st alpine hotel

Faulhorn was the favorite destination of the first alpine tourists in the area around Interlaken. And so the Hotel on top of the Faulhorn with a height of 2681meters above sea-level is not only the highest alpine hotel, but also the oldest alpine hotel. It dates back to the year 1830 and the first tourists were taken there by horses or alpine-chairs, carried by locals. Today you may at least take the cable-car from Grindelwald to First and still have to hike the rest - about 2 hours on a partly quite steep path in order to be able to enjoy the 360 degree-panorama with Eiger - Moench - Jungfrau - Wetterhorn - Schreckhorn - Brienzer Rothorn and many more.
The hotel and restaurant are open daily
between end of june and October 20th !!
for other dates, you better phone them in advance !!
In Faulhorn-hotel you are really off the beaten path - it is besides Weberhuette the only hotel and restaurant at the hiking-path between Schynigge Platte and First.

Bakerstreet 221b is just 25km off Interlaken
  • Tip Rating:
  • Meiringen - in a distance of about 25km east of Interlaken - is a must for all fans of Sherlock Holmes : In der very centre of the lovely village of Meiringen you may see the world's first authentic replica of the living-room of Sherlock Holmes in Bakerstreet 221b. This replica was made according to the exlanations, given in the books and it includes all the small details beeing mentioned there. This room is shown in a small museum that includes plenty of other interesting Holmes-souvenirs, letters that were sent from all over the world to "Sherlock Holmes, Bakerstreet, London" etc.etc.etc.
You really might get the feeling, Holmes was a real person, how else could they show his private things there...
The Sherlock Holmes Museum is open
    May-September : Tue-Sun 01.30-06.00p.m.
    October-April: 04.30-06.00p.m.
The Sherlock-Holmes-museum is next to Parkhotel du Sauvage inside a small wooden church.

This is another great daytrip from Interlaken : The open-air-museum of Ballenberg in Brienz. It is a great museum with more than 90 buildings, that were originally built in various parts of Switzerland, these mostly wooden buildings had been rebuilt in small groups, so you have a small village of Bernese houses, a village from Ticino etc.
It is amazing to see the differences in style and details and all of the farmhouses still have pigs, cows, horses, geese etc. and during the day most of the buildings are open for the visitors and you may watch the staff of Ballenberg, when they work on the farms like in the old times, when they were producing their own baskets, made wood-carvings, weaving, spinning the wool, baking bread or making cheese etc. There is also a blacksmith you may watch, or you may have a meal in one of the various traditional inns.
From the Brienz train-station there is a bus taking you to the Ballenberg-museum. Walking-time from the station is about 25 minutes. When you arrive by car : follow the sign-posts at the east-end of Brienz !
    Ballenberg is open daily May-October : 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m.
    the entrance-fee during opening times is 16 sfr / 10 Euros !
besides these times you may walk around on your own without entrance-fee !!
There is a really large parking at the entrance - free of charge !!
and also several lockers for small luggage !
...and psst : this quiet parking is a perfect place to spend the night in your motorhome free of charge !!
BUT illegally of course !!! :-))

Axalp - great to ski and to hike
  • Tip Rating:
  • Axalp might make a perfect daytrip from Interlaken, when you stay for a longer time and want to explore the scenery far away from the main-stream-tourism ! Axalp - in the south of Brienz, and high above Giessbach-falls - is one of the few areas, where skiing is possible for at least 4 months a year. There are 2 hotels up on the mountain and many "chalets" - wooden houses that could be rented also by tourists.
On my picture you may see the former " Hotel Kurhaus Axalp " / , today it is called Alpengasthof Axalp, and this building was constructed completely of wood. It is a really cosy feeling in such an old building, when it is cold and stormy outside.
In summer you may take various of hikes from Axalp:
Walk down to Giessbach and Brienz
Walk to Hinterburgseeli, to Zuun and finally Meiringen - a fullday-tour.
Hike to Hinterburgseeli ( a small and cristall-clear lake) - about 2 hours
    To Faulhorn and First (see my Grindelwald-page !) - a scenic fullday-trip
The hotel on my picture has a special meaning to me, because it was there, where I started my carreer in the hotelbusiness and it is a lot of fun for me today to think back of my first severe struggles with the terrible Swiss-german-dialect and hundreds of young skiers, driving me crazy with their orders....
Take the train from Interlaken and a bus from Brienz station to Axalp.
drivingtime from Interlaken, mostly on a narrow road, is about 60 minutes !
driving to Axalp by your own car is possible , but NOT advisable !
The road is really narrow and has only a very few passing-places.
before driving that road, you better check the timetable of the buses !!

Reichenbachfalls - the place where Sherlok Holmes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Reichenbachfall is the giant waterfall opposite of the village of Meiringen, about 2 km to the south from the Sherlok-Holmes-museum. Conan Doyle - the author of Sherlok Holmes - was a regular guest in Meiringen and he was so very much impressed of the scenery of Reichenbachfall, that he thought, this would be the perfect place to die for his famous dedective. When you get out of the funicular you may see a yellow star at the other side of the waterfall and this indicates the place, where Sherlok Holmes had a fight with his arch-enemy Prof. Moriarty and both of them finally fell down and died.
Reichenbachfall is a perfect place to start hikes to Rosenlaui, Grosse Scheidegg and other scenic places.
    --- --- --- --- ---
Reichenbachfall is in the south of Meiringen,on your way to Aaraeschlucht. Driving there by car takes about 35 minutes from Interlaken.
