I was in the Alps during April and was hiking all over the mountains in shorts and t-shirts (also took along a sweatshirt in case it was cold.) There was no need for a coat...maybe a light one at night...but I didn't need one. I've been told that my wearing shorts and t-shirts experience in the Alps during April was an abnormality - that usually warmer clothes are needed. Maybe, the cold just doesn't bother me as much as it does other people.
Once you start taking pictures of the mountains, it's hard to stop. There are tons of scenic spots for snappin' photos. Take more than one roll of film.
Hiking shoes/boots are a must. Leave a Comment

Luggage with wheels is always a good idea, wherever you are travelling.
Whether snowy/wet/sunny/warm or cold weather, layer your clothing. Wear thermal underwear (these are easily bought at the local clothing shops), with warm leggings and a top under a toasty jacket for the cold. I have my trusty grey duffle coat, plus a white snow jacket for this type of weather, and they are a godsend! Wear flat shoes that have a good grip, as when it is snowing, and afterwards, when it is sludge, it's really difficult to walk and keep your balance! Always remember to bring a cap/hat that covers your head and neck for when it gets hot, as well as sunglasses.
unscreen (Factor 35 is the minimum factor I use, no matter what the weather is), headache tablets and usual little things like some plasters for blisters, cotton wool, germolene etc.
Your camera, with charger, and a EUROPEAN plug extension.
Have a map of the area handy, plus a local bird, flower and tree book. For this you also need a pair of good quality binoculars Leave a Comment

Normal size backpack really helps because you need to use both hands on your walking/hiking sticks.
leave your fashionable and expensive shoes at the hotel/hostel and take walking shoes instead or better still hiking shoes or else you might get blisters and corns from walking. Take warm clothes with you.Walking inside the tunnel can be a bit chilly at 3454m above sea level.
Brings loads of film if you use film camera and extra memory card if you use digital. They do sell the films but you know, it's expensive. Leave a Comment

It is worth remembering that Switzerland has its own plug socket configuration different from the rest of Europe and the UK. You will need a seperate adapter Leave a Comment

If you are going to the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe), bring something warm to wear. Also - gloves were good to have. We went in September, and it was the middle of winter up there.

A backpack is a good idea for day hikes to hold your water bottle, maps, etc.
I suggest you take a good pair of walking or hiking shoes and a jacket that is water proof in case you go near the falls.
Of course you have to have your camera! This is one of the most beautiful mountain areas in the world!
I take binoculars on every trip...you never know when you might need them! Leave a Comment
