Very convenient if you travel by train, this self-service restaurant offers you a buffet with different types of meals, and additionally serves some "Tagesteller" - dish-of-the-day - meals.
Coop, who is the operator of the restaurant, is known for the good quality of food. The restaurant is only 200 metres from the station.
Favorite Dish: Buffet with very good foods...

I had written the first version of this tip in 2003, after my first stay in Interlaken. On my last visit I found that the place was very much the same, but the menu was different and also the name has changed. I have edited my tip accordingly.
The place is modern and elegant, with a wide terrasse for dining outside while enjoying the view of the Jungfrau. The staff is kind and welcoming, and there is no dress code.
There is also live music on some evenings, and there are also some evenings with special dinners, like raclette or barbecue, at a fixed price. The restaurant is open from 8.00 in the morning (it serves also breakfasts) to 23.30, however the kitchen closes at 22.30, so after that time you can order only from the bar. For part of the day it operates just as a café, serving drinks, sweets and ice-creams.
Favorite Dish: One of the local specialities: the Legendary Roesti. It is a very substantial dish made of potatoes, sausages and melted cheese.

I had written this tip after my first holiday in Interlaken, in 2003. Although the restaurant is still there, it has changed into an Italian restaurant that has also some Swiss dishes in its menu. I have not eaten there after this change, but I had a look at the place and at the menu. Here below you will find the parts of my old tip that stilly apply.
The place is informal and friendly. It is located in a small street with other restaurants, but this is the only one serving Swiss food in this street.
I have compared prices of the same traditional dishes in various restaurants in Interlaken, and this one is less expensive.
Favorite Dish: A classic of the region: Bratwurst with onion sauce.

Please do not eat there, it has the worst Chinese we have ever eaten. Also there is this sleazy joint on the main road which claims to have Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese food. They have the most pathetic portions I have ever seen and worst is none of the Chinese restaurants can speak even reasonable english!!!!!!

Migros, just next to the train station in Interlaken is a big supermarket, with a restaurant area, where you can eat some local dishes, for very reasonable prices.
I used it all the time I spent in Switzerland, sometimes eating at the restaurant area, others buying some take away food, at the supermarket area.
Favorite Dish: local food at the restaurant area
Fresh salads, Swiss cheeses and sandwiches, at the supermarket area

.When you are in Interlaken and you want to go up to the Jungfrau you will have to pass through Lauterbrunen. If you feel hungry and want a quick bite, three is a restaurant just coming out of the station on the right hand side, which serves local food as well a variety of Italian dishes. I am sorry I did not take note for the place as when we entered they were just about to close and when we left we ran as otherwise we would miss our train. The pizza I ate was just one of the bet I have eaten in my life. I think the picture talks for itself.
By the way, we chose this place because there was nothing else open when we were there or we did not find any other place as we were in a hurry to make the best of the time we had

If you are looking for a cheap lunch in Interlaken don't go past the Coop shop opposite Interlaken Ost. Upstairs you will find a fabulous food buffet with an assortment of lunch fare that will boggle you. There are sandwiches, salads, hot food, quiches, desserts, pastries, fresh fruit, juices, beer, tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc. You can see the prices of everything as you choose, so you know what it is going to cost.
Favorite Dish: Excellent value for a salad and sandwich. About 11 CHF.

The Schuh is one of the nicest restaurants in town. We had shopped before in the chocolate store and decided to stop in for some chocolate fondue - pieces of strawberries, bananas, oranges, etc. dipped in warm chocolate. Delicious!

Open for lunch and dinner, Spice India is located on a side street in town. The restaurant's specialties include Tandoori and Mughlai cuisine. We ate here a couple of times in our short time in Interlaken and the food was always good. Prices were comparative to Interlaken.

The famous Glacier Restaurant (Piz Gloria) and the Sphinx Terrace are next to the weather station on a peak next to the Jungfrau. We got a train from Interlaken the Grindlewald and on to the top of the Jungfrau, this place is famous for many things but not least because they shot a James Bond movie here "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" The restaurant revolves 360 degrees every hour so you can see all of the mountains and the glaciers too. We didn't go in but we went there for the views so here's the photo, go see for youself.
